Safety cars being unfair is a well worn subject on the Planet F1 forum and this always revolves around the loss of 'lead' that's been built up. But the point of the safety car is not as some people seem to think to close up the race, but to get all cars in one place and give the marshals a gap to work in. I don't remember F1 without safety cars, what did they do pre SC?

In some ways, this last race was very similar to Russia. Lando Norris led from pole and was in command of the race until the last laps when it started to rain. Lando didn't want to change tires and give up his lead, Mercedes made the right call to bring in Lewis even though he didn't want to change tires either. Lewis won with a bit of luck with the rain and Mercedes getting the tire strategy right. It was a heartbreaking loss for Lando, "robbed" by the rain - a random act of god. But ultimately Lando admitted the wrong decision to not change to rain tires is what lost him the race. Lewis was lucky on that day.

People can blame Masi all they want and perhaps rightfully so. But it was within his power as Race Director to make the decision he thought was right - another random act of god (sort of). I get why LH fans are super upset, but Masi alone did not lose Lewis the race, ultimately Mercedes got the tire strategy wrong. Lewis wasn't lucky on that day.

It is what it is.

The more I think about this the more I come around to the idea that actually, Hamilton wasn't 'robbed', or at least he wasn't robbed by Masi. The safety car is always a 'random' event that can change everything, it really hinges on whether Merc didn't pit Hamilton because they believed the race would end under the safety car. If they thought that, then the decision to stay out was obviously right, but on the radio Bono said to Lewis '....the race MAY not restart'.
Also, if we imagine the safety car coming out three laps earlier, which meant that race definitely would restart, I'm not 100% sure but I'm guessing they still wouldn't have been able to pit and keep the lead, so they probably would still have wanted to keep track position, and if they had pitted then presumably Max would have stayed out since that meant Hamilton would have had to pass Max to win and Hamilton couldn't afford a crash....

So, yeah, the safety car definitely screwed Hamilton over. But the safety car is a random event at every grand prix. Masi didn't follow the rules and that should have played into Merc's hands... but it would have screwed Max over. If all the lapped cars had been let go and the race had finished under the safety car I don't believe the Hamilton fans would have accepted that Max had been screwed over even though he was sitting behind Hamilton with new softs on the car.
Hamilton fans no, of course not. But Max fans would've been upset because it seemed like Masi was going to let them race with the lapped cars in place. Conceivably under that scenario, if Max got by the lapped cars fast enough, he might have still won the race with his soft tires.

But this "what if" guessing game is pointless. Let it go, you're right with the first part of your thinking above. 馃榾

Take a look: this is the sum of all 2021 qualifying times of every driver. The gap between Hamilton and Verstappen is 1.387 seconds.

Interestingly though, Hamilton is only 5 secs faster than Bottas, check out Max vs Perez. 13 seconds!

Perez is opposite to Bottas: bad at qualifying fly laps, and good at race pace.

Shouldn鈥檛 the sum of all qualifying times be divided to the number of races also?

I'm impressed with Lando Norris. He could've been 4th place in the Championship too, but he had a lot of bad luck this season. Including being taken out by the Bottas wrecking ball incident.

Yes but never let that get in the way of an F1 statistic.... Max 'clearly outperformed the car by 13 seconds. 馃榿

Max is in a different league given his Red Bull Honda setup. He can match what the Mercs has been doing since last year 2020. That鈥檚 the reason why the trio of Hamilton, Verstappen, Bottas has the most podiums in all of F1鈥檚 history 馃槻

Clearly Max driving skills is more than the car. Although Lewis is truly great as a driver, it can be overshadowed by his ever dominant Merc engine & racecar 馃槜

So what you are saying is that if Hamilton drove the Red Bull he would be behind Perez in the championship?
