PS: I still believe Checo’s exciting duel with Lewis in Abu Dhabi made a huge difference in the Championship decider. Max even thanked Checo about it. So whatever we might “allude to” or “infer” Max is abundantly thankful to Checo for what he did (and also ofcourse to Latifi) 😁 It would’ve been different otherwise. Carry on 👍

I think they should have gone ahead, and I'm surprised they didn't. If nothing else to get the FIA to explain themselves properly.
Me too, but we don’t know what kind of pressures the Mercedes F1 team had from Mercedes brand and from the FIA. Probably they were told by FIA that FIA ICA was not going to change the result anyway, but in exchange they promised to start an investigation about what happened in that last lap with the SC rules in order to clarify it. That was FIA’s best offer to Mercedes… So the FIA mistake was done and FIA was not going to remedy it through the FIA ICA.

It was going to be a sterile fight, which was not going to lead anywhere, and which would have further strained relations with the FIA, with part of the F1 fans, possibly with the marketing department of the car brand... so in the end they decided not to go ahead with the appeal. The damage had been done by FIA Race Director, and there was no possibility of a fair trial. And if Mercedes took it to an outside court for a fair trial, it meant quitting F1 (as per Concorde Agreement)…

Plus I guess making an enemy of the FIA would be pretty stupid as no doubt they would then enforce everything and anything they could find in future. It's always been that the FIA has seemed very shady about it's governance, and surely it must be getting to the point where it's Ferrari's 'turn' to take the spotlight again...😗

Even if they had gone to appeal it would not have been possible to confirm what the race result would have been with 100% certainty, unless Toto has a crystal ball.

Well, if we are being 100% truthful, if the RD had followed the rules 100% properly, the race would have ended under the safety car. Which means Lewis would have won the race and the WDC.

Yes, it was possible with 100% certainty: from the moment Masi allowed cars to unlap themselves on the penultimate lap (57/58) of the race, the race should have ended under Safety Car (if article 48.12 had been respected), therefore the order of the race on lap 57 would have been 100% the order of the end of the race on lap 58.

That is why Toto asked to consider the race finished on lap 57, as it is how legally it should have finished on lap 58.

I stand corrected, but as they say around here “if my auntie had baws she’d be my uncle” it’s done and in the past, time to move forward towards the new season.

While I agree with Martin's sentiment, it kinda makes you wonder why you watch something if the rules are arbitrarily applied. No doubt about who I wanted to win the 2021 title, but at the very least I would like to know what the score is going forward. I don't really think it's to the good of the sport to have another debacle like that come the end of the year.

For the record, I don't believe the FIA wanted Max to win the championship, I think they wanted a dramatic conclusion whatever the outcome. It will be funny to see how things play out next year if say the Merc is crushing everything else and Russell ends up being a damp squib. Will the FIA try and come up with some random thing to scupper a title decided in September?

The most comprehensive analysis of all the rules that Michael Masi broke at the end of Abu Dhabi, and also by the Stewards who were his accomplices, one of whom also broke the Conflict of Interest rule by owning a Honda dealer 🤦

I do wonder how anyone could ever consider F1 a sport ever again. Obviously it is just entertainment, no different than WWE wrestling or a Jackass movie

We hope that this famous investigation that the new President of the FIA has opened into what happened in Abu Dhabi will at least serve to prevent something similar from happening again, and I certainly hope that Michael Masi does not continue in the position of FIA Race Director after proving his incompetence, and after having broken all those rules.

It would also be good if they better choose the Stewards, because being the owner of a Honda dealer there is undoubtedly a conflict of interest when a Honda-powered driver competes for the Title against a driver from another brand
