Haven't we been through this before? This is all part of the I can go the pub and my car will drive me home fantasy. Everyone will want a car at the same time... plus, this is more of the 'sharing' economy that was so popular 'before' the Covid19 crisis, when 'Hotdesking' seemed like a really great idea. If this system was in place right now what the hell would we do? The scientists have already said that we should expect more virus outbreaks over the coming century, so maybe we shouldn't be thinking about 'sharing' desks and cars and the like in future?
Amen to that. This virus has brought home I think just how unsanitary and disgusting things had become. When we started hotdesking many years ago, disinfectant wipes were placed around the office. But once they were gone, they were never replaced.

Is it? Not here it isn't, it's diesel.
Not here either. The tube is electric though! And no batteries required 👍

At some point most cars will not be owned by just one person or family. They will be part of a timeshare or fleet.
This future you speak of sounds terribly depressing

All kids hear in school these days is how the planet is toast if we don't radically reduce our carbon footprint.
Sounds like socialist politicians and media here, they all believe the planet is saved if everyone just stop driving gas and diesel cars 😁

I wonder what they will blame when combustion engines are gone... then maybe they will enforce an extreme tax on electric car batteries since those cant yet be recycled, harmful production, dangerous natural assets etc. These retarded short term political solutions without any long term consequence analysis always amuse me. In Sweden anything goes as long as you referr to "saving the climate" 😁

If no one owns a vehicle in the future, then there is no point making different types of car or price bracket. Everyone will share a utilitarian vehicle... yeah right, rich people driving around in poor peoples cars. That ain't gonna happen.

Maybe the idea is to force the middle class into busses and trains while the rich use these future electric self driving cars 👍

I just go the pub within walking(stagger) distance. Of course not being on a bus route makes that necessary.

The more I think about it the more laughable/horrendous it is. Where do all these self driving cars go when no one wants them in the middle of the day? Are they just going to drive around clogging up the roads and using energy - or will they go park themselves in some... umm, I don't know, let's call them 'car parks'.

So no more Ferrari, no more Lamborghini, no more Ford most likely! Just faceless Applecarts for the working classes and Teslas for the extremely rich. Terrific.

Ok people going overboard here. Breathe, it’ll all be fine. This isn’t news, this has been out there. Some of these comments read like cowboys who won’t accept the automobile is about to take over. ‘There aren’t enough gas stations’

A few points:
Not ALL cars will be shared. But A LOT of them will after a gradual transition. Most people won’t care about owning a car. It’s a nuisance. They’re expensive and costly to maintain. You can still own a lambo if you like. If they’re still around. I hear VW wants to sell the brand to finance the electric transition. Rich people can drive their own cars or share a premium pool. Come on.
The point about pandemics. Ok... self driving cars aren’t hear yet so let’s not panic over germs. I’m sure solving the sterilization issue will be solved on time.
Not everyone uses their car at the same time. This won’t be a pool of 10 cars. It’s a probability equation, like insurance.
Where will these cars be parked?? Hopefully nowhere as they should be driving people around. Yes there will be peaks but we’ll have ample space as people won’t be using many garage spaces. The idea is to have less cars proportionately than today.
The 100% recyclable battery is already being developed. The electrification of logistics a retarted short term political solution. I’d like to read this again in 20 years. I don’t agree this is a depressing perspective at all. Leaving things as they are would be utterly depressing. We really need to get passed this carbon age. Perspective 👍

Perhaps we are viewing this wrongly, perhaps what we should be saying is that 'alongside' privately owned cars their will be a large fleet of self driving taxis roaming around...?

I still don't see how there will be sufficient demand for them all day, we know the majority of cars are used in the mornings and the evenings and that's not necessarily going to change unless a lot of people start working different hours than they work now.

We'll surely see more working from home in future, even after Covid

Yes, sure... but the working day will still have a beginning and and end, as will the school day. But this scenario is fraught with problems. Imagine they get this idea going and then one of these cars causes a big accident, what will happen? Will the Govt shut it down or view it as an inevitable part of the transition process?

I also think people will be reluctant to give up their cars, perhaps not so much the young (who seem to champion the cause of Uber despite it flouting safety regulations wherever possible) but older people like me who live in villages - I mean how long will this Johnny Cab take to get to me anyway?
