A nice send off to Kimi from the fans, but that was all it was... it seems like Merc don't have a leg to stand on but can someone tell me why it took 6 hours to decide in Max's favour?

And yes, Max was extremely lucky today, but Lewis has had some phenomenal luck in his time too.

In the old days safety cars were for exceptional circumstances. These days it's the default everytime someone so much as sneezes on the track... bogies at turn 3!
In all fairness it was placed right at a run off area if anyone had gone off. They had no choice really.

Mercedes claimed that there were two breaches of the Sporting Regulations (Article 48.12) namely that which states “..any cars that have been lapped by the leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the safety car” and “…once the last lapped car has passed the leader the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap.”

Mercedes argued that had this been complied with, Car 44 would have won the race. They therefore requested the Stewards to amend the Classification under Article 11.9.3.h of the FIA International Sporting Code.

Red Bull’s arguments in defence:

Red Bull argued that

1. “Any” does not mean “all”.

2. The Article 48.13 of the Sporting Regulations states that the message “Safety Car in this lap” is the signal that it will enter the pit lane at the end of that lap.

3. That therefore Article 48.13 “overrides” Article 48.12.

4. That Article 15.3 gives the Race Director “overriding authority” over “the use of the safety car”.

5. That even if all cars that had been lapped (8 in total, of which 5 were allowed to overtake the safety car) it would not have changed the outcome of the race.

Race Director’s Evidence

The Race Director stated that the purpose of Article 48.12 was to remove those lapped cars that
would “interfere” in the racing between the leaders and that in his view Article 48.13 was the one
that applied in this case.

The Race Director also stated that it had long been agreed by all the Teams that where possible
it was highly desirable for the race to end in a “green” condition (i.e. not under a Safety Car).

Conclusions of the Stewards:

The Stewards consider that the protest is admissible.

Having considered the various statements made by the parties the Stewards determine the following:

That Article 15.3 allows the Race Director to control the use of the safety car, which in our determination includes its deployment and withdrawal.

That although Article 48.12 may not have been applied fully, in relation to the safety car returning to the pits at the end of the following lap, Article 48.13 overrides that and once the message “Safety Car in this lap” has been displayed, it is mandatory to withdraw the safety car at the end of that lap.

That notwithstanding Mercedes’ request that the Stewards remediate the matter by amending the classification to reflect the positions at the end of the penultimate lap, this is a step that the Stewards believe is effectively shortening the race retrospectively, and hence not appropriate.

Accordingly, the Protest is dismissed. The Protest Deposit is not refunded.

Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits.

No, not if they need to get the vehicle off the track safely

I know you're speaking figuratively, but it must be noted that Driver of the Day went to Kimi. Still a fan favorite. 😀

Now that he's retired, I really no longer have a current fav to root for.

I’m super happy for Kimi! 👍 F1 wouldn’t be the same without him. Truly a Legend ::rimshot::

Time to replace run off areas with car eating gravel traps, and quality control on vineyards, too many sour grapes reaching the public.

Wow, what a race. I'm not a huge fan of either driver, but I do feel that Mercedes was hard done by.

You can't invent a new interpretation of a rule on the last lap of the season.

Nice list showing the Honda champions. I don't know if there is an "official" list of Heuer/TAG Heuer F1 champions, but here's my attempt at one:

'70 Jochen Rindt
'75 Niki Lauda
'77 Niki Lauda
'79 Jody Sheckter
'86 Alain Prost
'88 Ayrton Senna
'89 Alain Prost
'90 Ayrton Senna
'91 Ayrton Senna
'94 Michael Schumacher (Michael used to wear the S/EL ana-digi, like Senna's, during his Benetton years.)
'95 Michael Schumacher (I believe he also became a TH ambassador while at Benetton, appearing in "Don't Crack Under Pressure".)
'98 Mika Hakkinen
'99 Mika Hakkinen
'07 Kimi Raikkonen (TAG Heuer stayed with Kimi when he moved from McLaren to Ferrari in 2007)
'08 Lewis Hamilton
'21 Max Verstappen

Have I missed anyone?

It's been a long 13 year drought since we last had a TAG Heuer F1 champ, hurray for Max!!!

As much as I wanted Max to win and think he 'deserved' it more over the season, I can't help thinking it would have been better for the sport if the race had been allowed to finish under the safety car. Because a lot of people are forever going to think Max's first WDC was 'rigged'.

On the other hand, I wonder if Hamilton now feels some empathy towards Massa? A lot of people thought that was 'rigged' too. Largely Ferrari fans and Brazilians admittedly.

If they had ended under the safety car, the other side would have said it was rigged; even more so since there was no call made to Lewis to give back the place from lap 1. Would seem like the officials were favoring Hamilton. Either way it would be controversial.

There will always be opposing views, but few can deny that Max was deserving of the championship. Lewis was deserving as well.

Hi guys, anybody here ever tried the real F1 simulation ?

I was wondering whether it is really beneficial for F1 driver to practice in simulation apart from data gathering session (or my actual question is, will someday we see someone from simulation driving background dominating the F1 race) ?

What an impressive list of Heuer / TAG Heuer F1 Champions! Alonso and Button were also F1 Champions and at one point became TAG Heuer ambassadors 😀

I think that will never give someone the feeling of risk/sensation of open racing. also G forces and race craft with competitors driving in your mirrors is not something I see simulation drivers can fully handle.

Yes and there are other champions who are associated with the brand, such as Andretti. Fangio too, why I'm not sure, since I don't know that he ever wore Heuer

But I only listed those who became champions while sponsored by TAG Heuer during the year of their championship.

I should probably also add Alain Prost in '85, but TAG Heuer didn't appear on the McLaren until '86.
