Hamilton: Race Strategy, Fierce Driving, Tire Management, up to the Last End ::psy::

Verstappen: He should’ve let Hamilton pass on a sector easy to overtake. Max is still young and driving on a different level. ::rimshot::

Checo: Pit to 5th! Superb Driving 👍

This will be a hot debate. Ham being allowed to go wide in turn 4 for the whole race and Max being told to let Ham pass again for passing hime wide in the same turn
The big difference is that if you leave the track with all four wheels to overtake another car, you must return the position, whatever the part of the circuit that happens

Going into the race, Red Bull was on the upper hand. Hat-trick Free Practice, Pole Position, Leading the 1st stint. Mercedes initiated the race strategy with the undercut. Then it’s Hamilton’s extreme driving and tire management sealed the win for Mercedes snatching it from race favorites Red Bull ::rimshot::

What a great race, a good start to a much needed season.

It was everything - team, personality, strategy, skill, and setting.

Nice to be back.

Best, M

Apparently RB weren’t aware going wide in turn 4 would be tolerated during the race 🤦

It seems that in Race Direction they were not very clear or consistent in what could be done in that turn 4... 😒 I mean when the cars were alone and without overtaking. They also warned Hamilton not to go out at Turn 4, and he too was surprised at the change in criteria during the race...

Bloody stupid. What is the point of designing a track with a tight corner and then letting the drivers drive off the track. And even more stupid that they were told one thing in qualifying and one thing in the race.

Excellent drive from Perez from last to 5th.

This season is shaping-up to be competitive. Sorry for Max, but he'll have all season to make up for this.
Checo is showing lots of promise. Red Bull did good in bringing him onboard.

I agree! Max is on a level on his own (together with Hamilton) but Perez is really good and consistent in raceday. Will help take the fight to Mercedes on both Driver and Constructors Championship! Good job Red Bull!

PS: I just saw someone say “Mazespin” 😲😲 😜😜

This doesn't bode well for Bottas, if Max is bringing the fight then VB will have to support Lewis sooner rather than later.

With +0.745 second difference between Sir Lewis & Max, you can only imagine what would happen if there’s one more final lap? 😕 What do you think could have been done to make a different outcome from Max’s POV? 😕 Here are some of my thoughts.

1. Max should’ve chosen a better area for doing a clean overtake. Red Bull obviously has a faster car in this track layout. Turn 4 has been very controversial with Hamilton even going beyond track limits alone to allegedly to get a speed advantage. Overtake on a clean area.
2. Max should’ve let Sir Lewis pass on a track sector where it is easier to comeback from behind. Max lose much needed time catching Sir Lewis from dirty air. Remember Max was able to fully utilize his DRS but still unable to catch Hamilton. Give back track position where you can overtake easily.
3. By overtaking on Turn 4, inadvertently Max got sand and rubbles on his tires causing a millisecond disadvantage for his tires needing more laps to clean it and take it further.
4. Race Strategy & Supreme Talent got the better of a supposedly Faster & Powerful racecar from Red Bull-Honda. 👍
5. It is so much more heartbreaking for Max losing this battle of less than a second after doing a Hat Trick Free Practice, Pole Position, and at a time Fastest Lap (after being snatched by Bottas at the end) 🙁

PS: Hamilton finished 37+ seconds ahead of Bottas. Although a botched pitstop cause valuable time for Bottas, Hamilton’s strategy and talent is way way superior to Bottas. We might see the last of Bottas this year if he can’t take the battle to Hamilton (obviously been doing this for 4 years and counting without any success) 😵‍💫

Couple of points in response to that...

I reckon Max could have caught Lewis slightly quicker. He left his overtaking to the penultimate lap and then arguably got it wrong. He then fell too far behind for the reasons you suggest meaning he lost DRS for a crucial period. Of course he could have done some of those things differently in hindsight, but despite being an amazing driver, it's still not easy to think of all that when trying to control a car at 200mph 😀

Secondly, Bottas being 37+ seconds behind was mostly as a result of him taking an extra pitstop so he could get fastest lap. His third place position was not at risk, so the number of seconds behind Hamilton was of secondary consideration to the point gained from Red Bull.

Ah yes! thank you for that sir @imagwai 👍 Being in this forum makes me truly appreciate two passions I have, TAG Heuer and Motorsports 😀

I agree with Bottas having to pit again. But he was no where near fighting with Hamilton and Verstappen during the race. When Hamilton and Verstappen where neck in neck at the top positions, Bottas was 6-7 seconds behind, while the rest of the field where 10 seconds away from Bottas 😲 I hope this will not just be a repeat of last year 😵‍💫 (Hamilton Verstappen Bottas podiums)

On a side note, what do you think of Ferrari? They have clearly bounced back from last year but probably just fighting for scraps at the mid field 😁😜 :whipped:

Agreed on Bottas - he wasn't in the same race. Just pointing out the number of seconds he finished behind wasn't a realistic measure of how far.

Ferrari's main competitor will be McLaren this year I think. Maybe they can improve, though?

Personally, I'd like to see McLaren bringing the fight to Mercedes and Red Bull, but unlikely given their choice of engine.

Bottas also had a very slow first Pit Stop (nearly 11s instead of the usual 2.5-3s), so if we also add the extra Pit Stop he made to get the fastest lap (BTW, fastest lap record still is by my friend Pedro de la Rosa with McLaren-Mercedes since 2005 👍), then Bottas pace was not so bad, althought not so fast as Hamilton, of course

Had Max taken as many wide turn 4s as Lewis things might have played out differently. The close finishing certainly suggests so. As Max said: it is what it is. Let’s hope things change though, still no clear rulebook :whipped:

Track limits need to be black and white-sorry-no ok this time then changing parameters, best bit of the weekend was Max ‘presenting’ DC with his birthday cake after quali.
