·Of course the forum people are most important. But let's listen to everybody 😉.
I don't think they will have any trouble selling them all.
A solid gold watch would not have been interesting to me. Simply making the same thing but out of precious materials is lazier than having a custom face, hands strap and caseback. And it would limit the buyers to only the most wealthy imaginable.
Of course they won’t have any trouble selling them all. That’s already obvious. I don’t think anyone’s suggesting they’ll remain on the shelves.
I don’t know enough about watchmaking or industrial manufacture to know what constitutes more work - a ‘paint job’ on a dial, or making the case and decorating the mechanism, changing the strap for something out of the ordinary, AND having an interesting dial.
Also it would not have been impossible for TH do both - the simpler designs at the lower price than as well as. Their choice of course, they are a business in it to make money and must have run the numbers and figured the market was too small not to bother.
I was not at all suggesting they only made on to appeal to the wealthy. Though it is all relative, as nobody needs a $7k+ watch and even at that price point <.5% of the world can afford one. Other brands have managed to make an “extra special” version of their flagship iconic models - some costing 10x even 20x the standard model. Such a significant anniversary does not come around too often.
It is not the end of the world. This year is a big year for anniversary watches and there are plenty to choose from to suit all tastes and pockets.
And there’s nothing inherently wrong with Anni designs. I think some are simply expressing disappointment that none are inherently ‘special’ enough to commemorate the milestone. I’m not ‘hating’ btw. Just personalky disappointed none spoke to me enough to want to buy.
As for the facepalm it was directed at the marketing strategy - a long drawn out over egged countdown that comes and goes for jo apparent reason - to reveal 5 unimaginative and in some regards quite similar models - Yet the thunder for the reveal has been lost by a lack of control to protect against leaks. So the facepalm was aimed at the process not the watches.
Interesting analysis maybe: the moonwatch anniversary represents approx $100m in potential sales. Spread over 2 models. The Monaco sales maximum are just under $6m. So possibly unfair to expect comparable levels of ‘Wow’ and when considered as a proportion if the sales and inherent r&d budget TH have done a nice job. Personal taste and preference aside.
On the video, Stephane Bianchi confirms the launch of the 80s model at Le Mans. Patrick Dempsey does the same on the other one.
