Yeah, me too. And I tell you what, when you buy lots of watches at £250 it's easy to think you're not spending that much... but it adds up. Actually, if I'm being 100% honest that was something of a strategy. I did actually think how many 'expensive' watches am I going to get away with buying before the wife has something to say. But, I thought, if I buy lots of cheaper ones, eventually I could sell them and use that money to buy dearer ones and I would have the excuse that 'I'm just turning these 8 watches into this watch'.

It wasn't like a 'master plan' or anything, I did genuinely want to collect the cheaper watches, but that thought was always in the background. And it seems to be working. I'm not getting any trouble at all when I say I'm selling these twenty watches and I might buy a Monaco 24 for £6k. 😁

But of course it depends what your income is, sadly my income is such that I can't just drop £6k on a watch, in fact the most I've spent on a watch is still £3200.

The most I’ve spent is £2k, & also having second thoughts on dropping £4.5k now.

My income means I have to be creative with the finances to make a purchase, which also means I don’t want to make the incorrect choice on purchases

Yeah I totally get it. Spending £3200 was truly nauseating. But worth it, cos I bought the right watch. And I knew it was my must have.

I was the same when buying my Seamaster, as started out looking to spend half that amount. Was comfortable it was the right watch though, after a lot of research and trying them on. I knew I would still end up getting an Aquaracer, but the right one had not turned up at that point.

Moneywise, it was a huge decision though. My Wife convinced me in the end after pointing out that I literally wasn’t spending anything on cars, myself, or going out to the pub or football any longer.

So shopped around for both watches, with great deals, then on 0% credit card paying back monthly. The idea being that I then don’t get carried away as I mentally have the bill to pay each month.

I just want to enjoy a small number of what I see as nice luxuries. Still love looking at what might be next at some point, plus seeing what everyone else is buying/fancying too.

Sometimes the journey is the destination I guess.

What an excellent wife you have! 👍 I had a similar experience actually, my wife pretty much did the same...

I was determined to pay the mortgage off so I was funnelling 2/3rds of my wages into that every month and living on nothing - but then I don't need much money to live on to be honest. I don't smoke or drink much or gamble or go to football matches, have no kids, no personal car... so when the mortgage was paid off suddenly for the first time in my life I had free money. That's when it all started to go crazy... haha.

No complaints there. Sounds like we’re both very lucky in that respect.

Funnily enough, that’s my other plan currently. Moved house 10 years ago and increased the term as a stop gap, with every plan to be very short term. Lately it’s been bothering me, so have a solid plan to get that sorted over the next 5 years.

Strange how things change as you get older.

No, wife says she will also operate a 1 in 1 out policy in future.
Mine said that a while ago, still not in operation, but then my collection is tiny compared to yours.

I think she has about 20, but most of those are the old plastic F1s. I think it's more about practicality rather than trying to keep a lid on the value. Even with 20 it's hard to wear them all. I don't see her Omega very often or her purple Chinese SE Link....

Honestly best thing I ever did. Having no debts is a wonderful feeling.

I had the blessing of remortgaging midway through last year, when I had a feeling interest rates might go nuts. Had to pay an early repayment fee, plus the rate was still higher than existing deal. Rates gone up multiple times since, so the gamble has paid off.

I am definitely determined to clear that over the 5 year fixed period, as would also like to have that same feeling of what’s ours is totally ours.

It’s not even about the monthly payment as such, but more that it’s paid off.

Mortgage free for 20 odd years now, those 89/90 hour weeks were actually worth it, although my wife blames my breathing/heart problems on too much time underground, it did keep me out of bother, eat, sleep, work and repeat meant no time for nonsense.
We need it to become fashionable to wear a watch on each wrist to justify having a collection? and so having a bigger collection.

Mortgage rates going nuts! I remember the times of 16% rates, you kids have got it good.😉

Fair play, those are some tough weeks, but 20 years mortgage free is a proper result!

Yeah, my wife bought her first house when the rate was 15% in 1990. She lived on £5 a week. When I met her all she ate was baked potato and cheese and tinned pineapple.

Wow, that’s a nice collection of watches…even after the sale! Proper “curated” TH collection
