I'm going to be bored out of my mind tomorrow with my gf's family, so I'll probably read through it then!

a girl who believed she was Scottish
Curious to know if she got to the bottom of it?

Hahaha. Well... her mother and father were Scottish. But they moved to England and she was born in England, and as far as I know she'd never even been to Scotland. And yet, like a lot of people who live in Corby, she was a staunch Scottish nationalist.

“So while I can accept that people really like the Dato 45, when you have a watch that is clearly 'flawed' by the placement of the date, how can you give it a 'perfect' 10? Makes no sense to me, honestly... but there we are, the Council has spoken and the Dato 45 it is.

Can't change it now.

No point dwelling on it.”

Well, it doesn't make any sense does it? I would have respected someone who said 'I love it, but I have to take off half a mark because of the date'.... but no one did. 🙄

If you’re gonna make a tribute to a watch that became an icon because of its date at 9 o clock, a watch named ‘Dato’, then why the hell would you deduct a half point for adding the date? 😗 🙄

It's not the date at 9 o clock, it's that it's about 2mm too far to the left.

Seriously, which one looks better.
I get that maybe the Heuer 02 may be the issue, if so then the movement isn't suitable for the watch.
Honestly I don't know how anyone can look at that and think it looks fine.

The glassbox bothers me more than the placement of the date. It's a fine looking watch until you have it side by side with the original

The date position compared to the original doesn't detract for me at all, since the face is unsymmetrical regardless. It's not something I even think about when wearing the watch.

In real life the Dato comes across much better than in pictures; when I first got mine I was very impressed, way better than I expected. What I originally thought was quirky, I then found to be part of its unique charm. I don't have an original to compare it to, if I did I might feel differently. But standing on its own, the re-edition just works really well for me.

In hindsight, if I were to deduct half a point, it would've been for its thickness. You're right in that the watch isn't perfect, but for me a 10 didn't mean perfection. It's just like calling Bo Derek a 10, not perfect but pretty dang hot.

It’s a tribute, not a 1:1 copy so it’s not an issue. Head on photos only tell part of the story. Nothing beats the original Carrera designs anyway. I think the CV designs approached the original better than the glassbox. There’s nothing glassbox about the original so I don’t understand where that domed crystal idea came from. The crystal of the CV actually looks a lot more like the original plexi. Then there’s the thickness of the case. But the main issue is the lug design. Not just the length comparative to diameter but the finer details. I’ll illustrate with photos shortly.

Are you referring to the date placement or the thickness or the lugs or the glassbox? Seems like there's a lot of things 'wrong' with this watch... 🙄

If you want TAG Heuer to issue a 1:1 tribute, like Omega does all the time, then it has issues yes 😜

There’s no way to combine the original proportions with a 38-39mm watch anyway. Proper samourai lugs in that case. It only works on a 35.5-36mm case. I would love for them to re-issue the original case but that’s for the freaks, microbrand territory. It would sit at the other end of what TAG Heuer is today.

All I want is them to put the date in the right place, I don't care about the rest of it.

Personally I don't mind that the date isn't in the exact position as on the original. I just think it was a fairly bold choice of model to reissue at all, and I think the asymmetrical design negates any issues with placement. Nowhere near as bad as a 4:30 date on a 3-register chrono, for instance.
