Needs to be in-house movement at a good vfm. IMHO.

I can't help feeling that if they did though, you wouldn't like it. Unless it was a 39mm Black Bay inspired knock off which isn't going to do them any favours at all.

What price point would this mythical watch be aimed at? If we're talking in house then straight away it's going to be expensive 'for a TAG'

Same as the BB58 and pelagos, which everyone says are ‘good value’?

Agree. If Tudor can do it at that price, why can't TAG?

Tudor even have TAG beaten on ambassadors (a certain Mr. Beckham).

No reason at all. On a slightly related note, how is it Tudor get a free pass for using aluminium bezel inserts on the BB58? I hear a lot of complaining about TAG using them on some models as if it's shamefully outdated.

Tudor can keep Beckham, to be honest.

    Aluminium is more vintagey.

I complained about TH using aluminium on the green/red quartz aquaracers a few years back, not because it’s outdated, but because it’s a fragile, soft material and bezels get a lot of knocks. For something that’s less of a tool watch, like the bb58, my opinion has mellowed. I’m still not a huge fan of the aluminium on the bb gmt, because I do view that as a tool watch, but also I far prefer the softer colour of the aluminium BB to the bright ceramic of the gmt master.

Sure I would. I'm talking about something that grabs the attention & respect of the watch community at large, something lust worthy of folks who'd normally look away from TAG. If it's something that good, why wouldn't I like it?

It might be an all new watch line, priced affordably to compete with Tudor, built with high quality finishing, an in-house movement and a super killer look.

Or, it might be a heritage watch, with a new modern version of the original Calibre11. Made to exactly look like the original in every detail, similar to what Omega did with their Ed White Speedmaster Cal. 321 re-issue.

Or something that pioneers a certain segment into popularity, similar to what the original TAG Formula 1 did or what the moonSwatch is doing now.

You mean like the Heuer 01 which pioneered skeleton dials into popularity... ?

I'd love to believe TAG have it in them to release an all new line that does these things and doesn't use an old name, but I'm not sure I can. Apart from anything else, if there was a new in house three hand movement then it would surely end up in the Carrera first, wouldn't it?

Nope, that's from the Biver era and I doubt they're considered popular or attention grabbing by the non-TAG watch community at large.
It doesn't have to and that was really my point; seems we all expect the same old same old, which isn't horrible but isn't great (IMHO).

Yeah, I know it's from the Biver era, I think it was pretty attention grabbing at the time... it's asking a lot to expect a BB58 kind of hit from TAG or anyone to be honest.

In my opinion, not much is missing for Tag Heuer to get back on track with enthusiasts:

    - stop with the 43mm, 44mm or 45mm sizes on the Carrera and Aquaracer and come back to 39mm, 40mm or 41mm

    - a manufacture movement on the Aquaracer, Monaco (Caliber 11) and Carrera while keeping the current prices (others, not only Tudor, manage to do it)

    - more models that remind the past like for example the Autavia GMT, Monza etc

I thought we were trying to capture a new audience not pandering to specialist watch forum people?

Not long to wait for a spamking new hyper modern Monza...

Indeed, I have already seen it on the roadmap but I don't like it at all :(

Isn't the constant comparison with Tudor a bit silly? Tudor competes in a lower price segment against Oris, Longines and similar and TAG Heuer is step by step upping the prices to move away from that entry level price point. An in-house Aquaracer would be priced between 5-6k at least, competing with things like Omega's semaster 300 professional

The problem with TAG competing with Omega price-wise is that Tudor has them beaten on quality/finishing/value in a lower price category. Fine if you just want a brand name on your wrist, but not fine if you're really into watches.

But doesn't that mean Tudor has Omega beat too? In my hands the newest Aquaracer 300 looks and feels as premium, if not more premium (at least when it comes to bezel turning feeling), as the Seamaster professional 300.

To me value for money is a strange argument when talking about luxury products. If value for money was what I lusted for I would only collect Longines, Farer, Christopher Ward etc. In reality none of these products present actual value for money since most of these mass produced factory finished products could theoretically be sold for like 500-1000 Euros and still be as good (of course not true when you get into actual luxury, like GS, with more hand made stuff).

OK, let's use the term "relative value" then.

Tudor doesn't necessarily have Omega beaten on quality/finishing either, I think Omega are slightly ahead there still, but I am sure they are hoovering up a few potential Omega customers as well. But of course this is just my opinion as this stuff is somewhat subjective.

One thing TAG should not do is try and be Tudor just because Tudor is the flavour of the month. It seemed that JCB set TAG on a good course reducing prices, bringing brand new products to market (Connected - which has been a huge success whether you like it or not, Heuer01) and bringing back the H02 Autavia, also his enthusiasm and charisma seemed to work wonders. Since he went upstairs it seems it went a bit off the map and now Freddy is trying to take it in yet another direction. Perhaps what TAG really needs is a bit of stability, maybe Freddy being young is not a bad thing, maybe he will stay a while rather than just stopping off for a few years and they dropping it into someone else's lap to 'have a go'?
