·Just a thought, was the decision to change the outer ring to black to disguise the fact that movement is too big for the case? Because the subdial is clearly nearer the edge, but they've done quite a good job of tricking the eye - unlike the date.
I don't believe so. The white tension ring of the glassbox models is not as wide as in the 36mm originals. Additionally the black gap between the subdial and the dial edge of the Hodinkee dato is in fact slightly larger than in the 36mm original. A white tension ring would have made it look more like the original imo.
This classic look wouldn't have been achieved with the calibre 18 as the subdial is placed more inwards. It would have looked off compared to the original.
I believe the black tension ring was chosen to make the dial appear larger and because the the glassbox milky ring distortion. The black tension ring reduces this effect yet gives it a white edge, similar to the original. The difference of this effect is obvious when compared to the Fujiwara (photo by Monochrome)

Forgive my horological ignorance, but wouldn't it be possibly to print a date wheel where the figures were 1-2 mm to the right and so allow a comparable gap at the edge of the dial, to make it less aesthetically displeasing (ie more like the original which I actually quite like).

A slightly more right position of the date window would have matched the original better. Mind you, on the original Dato the date window is placed closer to the edge than the subdial. It's not symmetrical either.
TAG Heuer made a tailor made date wheel to allow for the 9 o clock position in the new watch. I haven't seen the Dato date wheel but the standard H02 looks like this.
From this picture you could argue the numbers could be placed closer to the inner edge. Perhaps on the Dato date wheel this is the case and there was room to place further inward..

If they were making a bespoke wheel anyway, as they must have (because the date would have been on it's side) as you say then surely they would have tried to get it in a better position if they could. I appreciate that it's not symmetrical anyway, but it's clearly 'better' placed on the original.

·The HODINKEE LE Carrera will be ordered to go back to the US before shop opening in Japan, considering the sales situation in the US.
There were about 60pieces in Japan, but less than 40 may have actually been obtained.
Unfortunately, HODINKEE is not so well known in Japan.
It is possible that the slight recovery of the inventory of EC in the United States was achieved by appropriating the increase from Japan.
