My biggest problem with the new Porsche Carrera is the date hanging out of the bottom subdial.
Makes sense since they reduced the diameter of the subdial. On the Autavia the date window fits nicely in the subdial.

So if TAG Heuer are really all about money (which they are, they are a business just like all the other watch companies) if there genuinely was this 'huge' demand for a classic 39mm Porsche Carrera then surely TAG would have made it. The fact that they haven't suggests to me that the silent large watch enthusiasts are the ones who actually give their money to TAG, whereas they struggle to sell out a limited edition watch the forum proclaims the best watch of the year. I'm sure there will be a classic 39mm Carrera along in good time, but for sure it will be a LE, because this 'huge' demand is unsubstantiated.

For sure you are correct about this Rob! They know what sells and obviously the majority of their customer base wants these modern bigger statement pieces. LVMH is a listed company with one single purpose; to make more and more money. Adam calls TAG's customer base dumb for liking these kinds of watches but I dont agree, its just what the casual TAG customer enjoys. We are lucky that they still cater to the enthusiast fanbase as well with some limited editions every now and then.

No, I'm calling TAG cynical for thinking their customer base is dumb enough to fall for this. Whether they are or aren't remains to be seen, but I don't think anyone's gonna care too much for this silly model.

One of the problems here is that TAG spends so much time trashing their reputation with collectors and true watch enthusiasts in the name of chasing more money, that when they do come out with something that collectors may like it's often ignored. Because of their greed they also think that they can charge lots more money for these collector editions, which puts off the casual enthusiast. 1,860 pieces of a limited edition will not sell well if it's priced such that only the crazy die-hards will go for it.

As for the Porsche partnership, I'm not saying there's "huge" demand but that the ones who actually care about such a thing are the vintage nuts.

I guess most TAG Heuer customers are the type of people that hang around shopping malls.

At the other end of the spectrum are the private collectors and super rich. Recall this one of one Carrera, the first TAG Heuer x Porsche collaboration watch done back in 2017.

With its matching Porsche 911R. (BTW, the lighted "Heuer" doorsill is cool!)

I think TAG Heuer customer base is certainly split into two groups, a group of people like you and many on this forum who have an eye on the past, these people are probably older and more affluent, and on the other hand you have the young(er) buyers who don't really care so much about the 'brand' and who don't care about forums and community but care more about Instagram and showing off their new toy. I'm guessing the latter market is worth way more in $ terms to the company, hence they tend to aim their watches in that direction. I don't fit into either identity, strangely. Which is probably why 90% of my watches are pre-owned and 10-20+ years old.

Point I'm trying to make is you can have all the community 'support' on your side, but TAG will look at the bottomline and clearly the guy walking into the boutique or Goldsmiths on a shopping trip is more likely to buy a 44mm Carrera than a classic 39mm Carrera, otherwise the shops would be full of 39mm Carreras. Would they have sold out the silver dial 160 Carrera if it was £500 cheaper? I don't know.

No matter how cool it looks, I still have not gotten over the tacky "HEUER 02 80 HOURS" text on the dial 🙁
Jim, you have exquisite taste. I agree with the above. I photoshopped the left side and got rid of "HEUER 02" as well as the outer ring on the dial.

44mm is not for me, but from a design standpoint I wish they hadn't made everything so busy. But I guess a cleaned up dial would look too much like the new Zenith so....

I find the Zenith dial to squashed up.
Subdials are nearly on top of each other.

Tri-color interlapping registers. That’s the Zenith El Primero trademark 😉 OG 1969 Zenith El Primero.

It is inherent within the El Primero movement that the subdials be close to each other in my readings 📖
