Small update- looks like this is now the Autavia Heuer-02. Price in Europe: EUR4,600 (not sure if that is the strap or bracelet)

That makes some sense since the Heuer 03, now Heuer 02, is based on the CH80 movement, as is the the 02T, with added tourbillion.

Nice open case-back for the new Autavia.
Interesting that they opted to use feet over meters for the "waterproof guarantee".

Yes, nice addition. Typically they don't do this form "Vintage" themed models.

Great article as ever. Small correction to one sentence though

"Would we prefer the new watch if it was say 40mm with a slimmer case? Yes. Would we pass on the Autavia because of its larger dimensions?" Yes. And I'm very sad about that.

I was firmly on imagwai's side of the fence......right up until I saw the latest release shots on the new bracelet. Taking the watch off of leather does appear to balance out the "chubby" proportions a little. Not saying I'm now placing a pre-order, but I will at least look to try one on the wrist.
By contrast, I thought the pre-release leather strap looked great. But the release version with the whiter-than-white stitching just doesn't do it for me.

JCB Playbook: Let's have a summit with the collectors and show them the prototype so as to gain feedback. What!? You don't think it's perfect? You think the bezel is too thick and the register subdial hands are too thin? Well, it's only a prototype.

Fast forward to SIHH: I fixed the date, made the registers white and disregarded everything else you said.

I know that the intent of this release was not to re-create the original. But IMHO, this is an extremely disproportional piece. Too thick for it's size. While I have not tried it on first hand, based on the fact that it's thicker than my Carrera Cal. 36, this will not wear well.

The most interesting part is the caliber Heuer-02 release. I've been hoping that it wasn't squashed entirely, though, the details are still unknown.

Overall, I had hopes that this would be the great chronograph comeback for TAG Heuer. C'est la vie. I still miss the awesome cal. 1969 prototype that was shown at Basel years back with the date integrated so well in the 9 register.

I will not be purchasing this Autavia and have hopes that other releases that include the Heuer-02 will be more interesting, provided that someone didn't cripple the movement in some way.

WALLPAPER set!

Now the obligatory meme...
Is the Telemeter-esque high dome crystal and apparent dial distortion not putting you off just a little? I know it's one of your nigggles with that particular retro Carrera.

I had high hopes for the Autavia, and this may change once Ive tried one on, but right now this does almost nothing for me. I like 3, 6, 9 layout because its different to the all the calibre 16 and 1887 watches, and I think the bracelet is beautiful, but the watch itself does nothing.

It doesnt scream Autavia to me, it looks like a vintage-themed diver with a chrono, which makes little sense and there are enough vintage divers around right now:

I am likely to buy the new Autavia. However, I don't understand why the bezel is so large. If you compare the bezel with that of the 2446 Mk III that was originally selected during the Autavia Cup selection process, it is clear that the new bezel and the arabic hour numbers are disproportionately large.

Below I'm showing:

(right) CAD image (?) of the Autavia 2446 Mk III (40mm, I believe)

Omega know how to do a vintage style watch properly. Their recent "Speedy Tuesday" edition sold 2012 pieces in a matter of a couple of hours (albeit no money down yet for these "orders"). Is it a faithful reissue? No, but they got the important things right to appeal to those who appreciate the heritage of that model but also want something unique.

Same story with the First Omega in Space (FOIS) edition, which I've previously mentioned that I bought with the full intent of swapping it for an Autavia down the line. OK, it has sapphire crystal, not hesalite, but the dimensions, applied logo, straight lugs, lack of crown guards and hand-wound movement are all spot on.
