    Very nice article!
    http://tagheuerenthusiast.blogspot.com/2020/05/feature-my-top-five-ayrton-senna-tag.html?m=1

Thanks for referring to my 6000 Senna and the thread I posted on it :)

And I’m happy to see my two TAG Heuer Ayrton Senna branded watches (the 6000 Senna WH1114.FC6030 from 1994, and the Formula 1 Chronograph Senna CAZ1015.BA0883 from 2016) in the 1st and 2nd positions of your list! :)

It bugs me that when you view the site on a mobile all the banners and links at the side are missing!

Interesting post about that awful pagani watch. I completely agree with you that it makes you wonder about the actual cost to produce a genuine Aquaracer. I assume that watch companies in general have a margin of about 80-90% on their products and what we actually pay for is the brand (at least when it comes to massproduced luxury brands like Tag and Omega).

Sadly the watch isn't 'awful', but it is morally wrong. It makes a mockery really, honestly it feels like 4 times more expensive than it actually is - but, a) they didn't have to design it and that has a cost... and b) yes you totally pay for branding and that's no different for Rolex or AP. I mean how much do you think the actual cost of a Royal Oak Offshore is, that costs £20,000? I can't see it costing more than £1000. And even like Richard Mille, what is the actual genuine cost of a $700,000 watch? No more than £10,000 I reckon.

But, like I said in the article, branding costs us, but it also costs the brand. TAG Heuer's advertising budget must be HUGE, so yes, if they did away with all the sponsorship they could bring their prices down dramatically. But really I think the whole argument is moot because I don't think any 'luxury' watch brand can justify their prices on a genuine 'cost' basis. A lot of it is just charging what you can relative to your brand's standing... and that is the customer's fault. If people are willing to pay £5000 for a watch that costs £500 to make then why wouldn't the brand charge it?

What I don't get is why Pagani don't fix the bezel and improve the lume and charge £150, it would still be a bargain.

Pretty sure it costs more but yes the margins must be insane on those types of watches. Moser's CEO mentioned in an interview that movement assembly of a perpetual calendar takes about 90 hours which, including taxes etc, costs the company approx 8-9000 Euro only for the time spent by a "master watchmaker". I found that fascinating to know about.

I think there's a distinction to be made between 'watchmaker' watches and branded watches. Sure, if you have people hand making watch movements etc that definitely has a cost.. but for example, Richard Mille. They charge £100,000 for some watches with simple three hand movements, I wouldn't count that the same as Lange or Moser. Again though, Richard Mille spend a lot of money on advertising, they sponsor three F1 teams at the last count - and let's not forget RM blew up when they put their prices up and made themselves more 'desirable'.

Sure though, you may be right about the costs of a $700,000 watch being more than $10,000... but I'd wager it won't cost more than $20,000.

I think as well, if you look at Moser, they make things like 'fume' dials where you have a very high rejection rate, so you waste a lot of money making ten times as many dials as you actually need to get ones that pass the test. So in that instance you could say the genuine cost of the dial is $25 or $250 dollars depending on how you look at it...

Branding (marketing) is approximately 50% of the RRP.

Having said all that if Pagani made a Royal Oak homage that was as good as this Aquaracer then I would probably buy one.

    844/5 (42mm with a shitty bracelet, soon to be replaced) and a 980.016 (32mm) on a Tropic.

Let me know if you want full-dead-straight-on shots or anything else. :)

Looks like I don't even have the 980.016 on there! Head on shots would be great if you can get them.
