TAG Heuer x HODINKEE LE Carrera Dato 45

I’m still getting used to the asymmetry but this is one lovely deep black dial 🥰 I know part of the quirkiness of the Dato 45 is having that single register at 3 o’clock and a date window at 45 minutes 😉
I have to agree and appreciate what Hodinkee has done placing a black chapter ring instead of the original white. This makes the Dato’s dial even more expansive and blends very well to the over-all package 👍 What attracted me the most is that it still inherently possess the simple yet clean and clear design of the classic Carreras. The hour markers also pop out against the black dial in contrast to the Carrera Silver 160 where the hour markers blend with the stunning silver sunburst dial! All in all I’m quite amazed with the Dato 45 since it has a personality very different from the two glassbox Carreras that I have which are the Telemeter & the Ice King 😀 I also find the Dato 45 a better partner to complement the Silver 160 since it also has the 160 anniversary rotor seen at the crystal caseback 😎 Makes me think that this watch truly harkens back to its roots in the golden age of watches & motorsports in the 60s-70s.

Congratulations Kappa!!! I love seeing your enthusiasm, appreciation of details, and genuine happiness in acquiring such rare piece! Truly well deserved good sir!

PS. Dato refers to the “date placement” but it also uniquely means “title of a local leader” in our country, where it makes the Carrera Dato 45 a little bit more special to me 👍 I assume this is the first & only one so far in my country, the Philippines. (This will probably be my last watch until I reach 45 😁) Cheers! ::rimshot::

Very cool! I guess this makes you the TAG Heuer collector "Dato" of the Philippines! 👍

Congrats!

Very interesting on the word “Dato”. I did ask TAG Heuer a few months back what the word meant…it’s not “date” in any European language. They didn’t know where it came from!

Oh my sir! I’m just a humble TAG Heuer nut here in this part of our world 😀 It’s quite an honor to be called a “Dato/Datu” since it means a well respected leader. Thank you sir @Mspeedster ! Since I only go by TAG Heuer/Heuer, it means alot to me to be here in Calibre11 👍 I just only want to be a knowledgeable and passionate enthusiast about TAG Heuer and become my country’s rep in a TAG Heuer conference-summit 😁 (probably in the future 😉)

I agree sir DC @Calibre11 ! When reading articles about the Carrera Dato 45, it always mentions the placement of the date (1st execution vs 2nd execution) and also references the 45 minutes chrono of the subdial. (1 or 2 depending on the execution) I looked into the spanish word of “date” and it’s equivalence is actually “fetcha” (or “petsa” in our language) so I’m not entirely sure where Jack Heuer got the word “Dato” 😕 I was thinking, but this is purely out of my own speculation, is that Heuer wanted to make the word “Date” a bit more spanish-sounding and came out with a unique word like “Dato” (which coincidentally a real word in our region 👍)

I think the Philippines/Malaysia definition of Dato is very fitting. It's basically saying this watch is the Carrera King! That must be where Jack Heuer got it from! 😜 ::psy::

Congrats @kappa_md very happy for you! Great addition to the collection.

Google tells me Dato seems to be an Italian word meaning 'given'?

Thank you sir Jimmy @Jim Dollares! Just lucky to get one for a decent price 😉 And thanks to both of you sir @Anthony.R for the clarification on the word “dato” It’s a great thing we are increasing our vocabulary and knowledge when it comes to Heuer/TAG Heuer 😉

Any friendly advice I give Jim on his English is given in the spirit of helpfulness and making sure he understands what we're saying. I wouldn't describe it as "crap", but happy to leave him in blissful ignorance if preferred 😉

Even if you would be fluent in French language I think the French still consider it poor.📖

Must be a similar meaning, related to Date. But they're a German company, not Italian. Or were you just acknowledging the Italian definition separately from the Datograph connotation?

Americans, like myself, are the worst when it comes to second languages. But I've studied Spanish & Japanese. Forgotten most of my Spanish, but my Japanese isn't too bad, in which Dato (打倒) means "overthrow" or "to beat".

Google translate tells me that Dato in German = Date in English. That must be it!
