That would be the 844/5 produced somewhere between 1986 and 1990.

The case is often referred to as the Monnin as it was originally produced for Heuer in 1979 by G. Monnin in France. The design had some tweaks when it became manufactured in house by Heuer and over the next 6 years under Heuer had several more tweaks before Tag took over the company and the last model the 844/5 was produced.

I have two 844’s and love them. Proper tool watches and the 42mm size makes them still relevant today.

Thanks for the very detailed response. Much appreciated. Your two pieces are sick. They are very nice. The hunt is on. Hope I can find one like yours.

If you’re not bothered with being an automatic or not then take a look through the 1000 series quartz models (I.e. 980.006 which is the quartz version of the 844 with a black dial). The .006 signifies the same large 42mm case with 20mm lugs as the 844 and lots of options for case and dial finishes.

PVD, PVD and Gold, Green PVD, Pewter case, Gold case, full lume dial, grey dial, orange dial.....many many variants of 1000’s.

Also worth a look is the 1000m Heuer diver, model 980.023 which is in similar styling but then 1000m rating and the crown at 4 o’clock.

Happy hunting!

I’ve got a 980.029L myself

Based on what you mentioned, you’ll want to hunt out a 980.006 (quartz) or an 844 (automatic), or there is also the 1979 quartz 8440, which are rare.

As per my last post I had been looking to get a Robust rubber strap on my PVD 980.029. Just to experiment I picked up a cheapy for inspiration and to learn from. I must confess I love the results, it gives it a very modern feel and while I am aware it is only a £500 at best it got me thinking. This year is technically the 40th-anniversary of the first 1000 and given the current trend of bringing back past classics I think it is high time the Aquaracer was put to bed and the 1000 line reborn.

Given the "Big Boys" are doing 2 tone dive watches on rubber straps, I think it is high time Heuer got back into the luxury dive watch game with a 40mm diver with a modern calibre, precious metal and quality rubber strap with dive extension. Price it at £3,500 above the black bay but below Seamaster and I think you find a really good sweet spot in the market that makes people stop and think

I just need them to make a few spare faces, can't get a decent one at 'sensible' money to replace my battle weary version.

@0-60 what was someone thinking with the hands on the 980.006!! 😡

The 8440 Monnin is lovely, and the quartz rarer than the Auto 844. Congrats.

ok SO here is the story. These two watches have basically been pulled out of NOS after being stored for 30-40 years. The 844.5309 which is the one with the wrong hands, the movement was destroyed as the battery leaked so someone changed the movement and hands. New correct movement, hands, gaskets and sapphire glass arrived and being installed this week.

The 8440 Monnin just needs new gaskets and a new movement and its getting that as again battery leak destroyed the movement. New exact same movement arrived and being installed this week so it'll be back to new. So looking forward to having them back working like new.

Pretty neat catch you have there! I am still hunting for an 884/5 myself. No luck as of now.

The only quartz that used the 844 designation in catalogues was the 8440. When it switched to Swiss made it became the 980.006, which the dial is 100% from, as Swiss made and the spelling of professional. The dial looks pristine, so would be a bit strange for the hands to need replacing, but the dial is immaculate?

There has been discussion before about whether quartz was added to casebacks and dials on 844 marked cases, maybe as a repair. It could be that production switched and they had 844 cases to use, and so a mix of Swiss quartz dial, French quartz movement and 844 Auto case we’re married together.

The oyster bracelet was never delivered on any of these watches that I’m aware of, with only the Jubilee bracelet or a tropic strap available.
The bezel insert is of the French made Monnin type as it has no metal tram line on the inner edge next to the crystal, but appears to have a gap - maybe an illusion?

All part of the fun of digging for answers.
