Lugs do look maybe a little taller. Let's get a ruler on them once everything's arrived

It doesn't look like it from this picture, but believe me when I say the glassbox dome crystal makes it look much smaller.

I still insist a 41mm case would have been far better.

Thanks. My first reaction when I first saw it was pure frustration. My love / hate relationship with the Telemeter carriers over with this one. Not as bad, but still filled with yearning of what could have been.

Sorry to hear that. I haven’t had mine off since it arrived..funnily enough I wasn’t tempted by the Telemeter, but I do love the new one.

I'm mostly frustrated because we've been waiting for years to get the Heuer02 classic Carrera and I see this as an execution filled with compromises and a huge lost opportunity.

I fully realize it's hard going back to any watch in the 36-38mm range after wearing the humongous 46mm / 45mm Carreras, but I still maintain that I would have little to no criticisms, if the proportions were more faithful to the originals and the size was ~41mm.

In any case, once I change the strap, I'll probably like more.

That said, I sure hope that we will eventually get ~41mm classic case 'Heuer' branded Carreras in the regular production line without this exorbitant price.

It's curious that you bought it given the above....

I can empathise as I had some misgivings about the Tele when I first got mine. But over time I have grown happier with it and whilst I agree there are compromises, the sheer beuaty of it and the way the look of the watch changes so much depending on the light still fascinates me. And it is the smallest ‘modern’ watch that I own so nice to have something slightly less dominating on yhe wrist. I really like the new Fragment too, buy for me personally as the fragment brand had no meaning to me, I was put off by the co-branding and the premium it seemed go be commanding. I’m generally not keen on logos splashed all over a watch other than the main brandname, be that a racing driver, car maker or designer.

I hope the new strap helps with your enjoyment of the watch.

I have mixed feelings for sure. To be honest it was difficult to pass up, given that this is the closest offering to the original Carreras, since the 90s reeditions.

That said, if I had certainty that larger heritage Carreras will be part of the upcoming collections, then I probably would have waited. But since we don't have that, hence the purchase.

Here's a composition I made from the above ^ photo to help visualize the differences.

The enlarged subdials completely disrupt the grace of the original layout.

Notice how the glassbox dome robs visibility a good 2mm+ from the dial. The original plexiglass granted good visibility of the slanted periphery at almost any angle. The glassbox dome does not, unless you are looking at it directly.

If we then examine the lugs we see that they are not proportional to the original's. Notice how they new lugs are roughly the same length, despite the larger proportions of the new dial. This completely changes the look. Also the sharp angles of the original lugs have been softened, robbing it from its defined form and reflections.

The end result of these compromises make the new watch look bloated and it betrays the masterful lines of the original. And that's not even examining its depth.

The so-called "milky ring"! However, it's very difficult to avoid this if you're using sapphire instead of plexi and want to give some height to the crystal.

Yes. The main problem I see is in the angle TAG Heuer used in the glassbox dome. Omega uses sharper angles on their sapphire crystals and it seems that this effect is minimized to a point that is negligible on their watches.

The Speedmasters with sapphire (e.g. the FOIS I used to own) are renowned on Omega forums for their milky rings 😀 Maybe it's more pronounced on the Heuer glassbox though.

The "ring" is probably more pronounced due to the glassbox angles. How does your FOIS compare to this?

The curvature of the glassbox completely diffracts the ability to view the dial clearly unless you are looking at it perpendicularly.

Here are some pictures from David @Calibre11 of the Skipper that show the glassbox effect.

I’ve never really noticed it on the Speedy. The dome is jowhere near as probounced as the Telemeter. I just see it as part of the ‘charm’.
