If you dont mind me join the conversation, i always read and wonder which one is first automatic chronograph between calibre11 and elprimero.

But this is my summary after one article after another: (Please correct me if i am wrong)

Elprimero was first introduced quietly in the late 1968 but only available ready for consumer in the late 1969.

Calibre was launched for public on 3rd March 1969. Which made it the world first automatic chronograph (or chronomatic as they term it).

Elprimero itself means "the first". Everytime i go to the zenith store in my area, the sales always told me its the first automatic chronograph hence the name. Maybe they are trained to do so but i dont know much about that.

As far as my opinion goes. Maybe Elprimero was developed first. But the one that win the race was Calibre11.

What do you guys think ? Is there any point i am missing ?

This is from the 1st link I posted:
In January, Zenith leapt out of the gate announcing their El Primero (translated as ‘the first’) movement, three months before the Basel fair (though it didn’t hit the market until October). [Read as 1st to announce]

The Chronomatic partnership announced their movement (you can read the report in this PDF of the 1969 Swiss Watch and Jewelry Journal) in March, and by the time of the Basel fair, the Chronomatic group dominated with their profusion of brands and models. [Read as 1st to market]

Compared to the high-profile announcements of the Swiss brands, Seiko seemed content to launch their Speedtimer quietly in May.

El Primero was announced first, but wasn't ready for production for some time after that. The Calibre 11 was production ready when announced and went into watches straightaway. Jack Heuer covers this in his book.
