Pls help. Crown won't screw on

Hi Guys, I got my Grand Carrera RS36 (CAV5185.FC6237) I've been wanting for the longest time in the used market. I adjusted the time yesterday and the crown won't screw back on. I took it to a local watch repair and was advised that I needed to change the crown and tube but need to have TH work on it. Guy estimated about $1200 to have TH repair it! Watch and all functions work. Googling it proves the problem seems to be common. I expected more from a higher end model from TH. Any cost effective suggestions? Or just leave it the way it is? Thanks for the feedback.

To have more exposure, this thread should probably be moved to the Tag Heuer Discussion. Here only the Tag Heuer Connected Discussion people (a much smaller crowd) will read it.

If you just bought it and this error was not in the description I would return it and save myself the cost and trouble of sending a watch I just got to TAG for a couple of months

Changing crown and tube for 1200? ridiculous.
Don't know what these crowns go for but the work is minimal. Any watchmaker charging more than 100 euro for that is ripping you off.

Yeah, that sounds absolutely ridiculous

Thanks for the replies. That's what I figured. For 1200, I can live without screwing the crown on. I never swim with any of my mechanical watches anyway. Anyone had any experience the same issue that can provide cost and process would be appreciated.

If you sent it back to TAG, you'd probably get a full service including a new crown for $500ish. But if you don't want a full service, then just find any independent watch maker who can service TAGs and get them to fix the crown.

Actually, you can send your watch in to TAG and you'll get an estimate of repair costs and what they want to do to it and you'll get the chance to either pay and get the work done, or you can ask them to send it back to you at no cost.

I had my Pilot serviced for about 300 quid and that included replacing the crown and tube, at a local watch maker.

Depends on what needs to be repaired. I was quoted $30 by a specialist shop for the installation of a replacement crown tube on a vintage 1000. That didn't include the cost of the part, just the work.

An 844?

Not sure on cost, but mine has a different sized crown tube to all the other 1000 models (3mm, not 2.5mm), so the difficulty has been sourcing one.

I think Tag1000diver.com can source the correct part.

No doubt Justin at the above could supply new crown and tube. The crowns on the 844 are actually generic and can still be found easily and cheaply today.

I also wonder if Justin could do something with the OP's Carrera perhaps...Maybe worth contacting him Tag Heuer Watches - 1000 Parts, Service, & Restoration - Louisville KY (tag1000diver.com) @ed c

Pretty sure he could, and at a very fair price, if the OP doesn't mind shipping him his Carrera for repair.

Dang you guys are awesome for the suggestions! I emailed Justin and waiting for reply. Hope he can help me source the part. I can only imagine how much tag would charge me if I go direct. Where is Justin located? Thanks again guys.

I've used him for both a vintage 1000 and a vintage Formula 1, but he also says he works on Carreras. He provides excellent service! 👍
