Quite. There's no point in buying something that you will never - or can't ever - use, and that will never be worth as much second hand as it was when new. So buy it, wear it and be happy, or don't buy it at all. Don't save anything for best! Or else you might as well have never had it.

One of the thing that bugs me about the 'watch community' is this obsession with the value of everything, and how much it will be 'worth'. As in, how much will it be worth if I never wear, never take the stickers off, never take it out of the box, never open the box. Of course, it's not just watches, people collect Lego and as soon as you break the seal on the box it loses money. How stupid is that? You don't even know for sure if the right kit is in the box, or if you've got all the parts!

I almost drooled on a NOS 1163 Siffert I held in my hands a couple of weeks ago. But I also realized the minute you make the slightest of marks on it, it will lose a lot of its financial value. Where’s the soul of such a watch? The greatest joy comes from wearing beaters that have never been restored/polished. The scuffs and dents tell a story.

Or not, since they're still available new.... Hell, less than MSRP actually - I saw one at a duty free shop last week.

Could be, not sure. Wasn't the last Gulf released years ago though? Long time to be sitting in a display case...

Anyway, next time any of you are flying out of the Sydney airport, check out the duty free shop and let me know which one it is

this monaco has a lot of future, it is an official edition of the 50th anniversary, the clock is beautiful and very well made, it is presented in a grand prize of formula 1 of Monaco, like the 1969 model. It is not an edition clock limited, only for Japan, or for France or for Manchester United .... is an official anniversary watch. and 169 pieces are very few, time will tell.

I only saw it from the front, and can't tell the difference. LEs that look like standard models are ::facepalm2::

Absolutely! Even more so because good quality and cared for watches should still be working in 100 years. As a consequence more and more of them are on the market, which in turn holds down the prices according to market rules.
But some some of them score very good at auctions, e.g. NOS or preowned by Celebrities:

I quite agree. I don’t own a single watch which is likely to hold much value, never mind gain anything. I wear my entire collection. I don’t think I could enjoy a watch that I kept in shrink wrap and locked away in a safe for fear of getting the tiniest mark on it.

However a watch that I like, and might have some milestone significance - it is handy to know if it is likely to raise, fall or stay relatively even over time. If for no other reason than to hold out and pick it up cheaper in 12 months from an AD shifting the last remaining one at a discount, or buying used with a few scratches on the bracelet and saving a few grand.

I love the look of the.l solid good anniversary moon watch for example - and there are very few modern SG speedy to choose from. - yet i’m torn - if it is seen as an ‘investment’ i’d never wear it. So a pointless purchase. If it is not that desirable then i don’t need to spend so much money today. Let someone else buy it and buy it next year for 30% off or more.

Likewise a rarer Monaco. It would be nice to own. But I tend to think they are all over priced and I’d not pay RRP for the standard one in any case. I could pick the current ‘Gulf’ design one for £2k less than this LE for example. If I were to buy today. Or I could wait

So personally, I’m more interested in potential acquisition savings than gains once acquired.

Definitely have to wear them. Bought my Gulf from new in November but that was so I could share it with my mum days before she passed so I have a connection and a day I will never forget. So I wear it and to me its priceless but I've also bought a 211B that was 3 years old and immaculate with box and papers for half the original price which I think is a much nicer watch tbh
TH make pretty watches but if you want to make money buy a ugly rolex

LE 50 also has a black strap and a lighter blue stripe but definitely not one for sure.
They still have the normal one in most AD in the UK

Is there a side by side comparison somewhere? Unfortunately I can't really remember details of the one I saw anyway though :/

It wasn't sitting in its own box, it was just in the regular display case. Could indicate that it was whatever the standard one was, but then the DFS also had a couple of limited edition Omegas just chilling around in the regular case too.

Whoa, calm down sir, the limited edition does not look like the standard Gulf!

I think King @Hubert has posted side by side comparison shots at some point?

I'm definitely in the "wear it" camp. I did have four NOS Heuers from the 1970s, but quickly realised that they were no good just sitting in the safe. Part of the reason that I sold my vintage collection was the worry about damaging something that was now worth a fair bit.
