Is this unaffected by obsolescence? 😀

TAG-Heuer-Formula-1-1.jpg
We were talking about obsolescence in the normal functioning of the watch, not obsolescence of its aesthetics ... and these four Formula 1 are sure to continue working well after more than 30 years! 😀

Do you think your Gen3 will continue to work after 30 years? 😉

How about the lugs?

They are beautifully mechanized on high-end materials. Why should they stop working? It is simple mechanics, as can be the deployant buckle or a springbar

You dont have to sell them to me, I'm not buying them anyway 😀 How about the lugs on plastic f1?

Gen2 Modular has no plastic lugs but titanium lugs, a material used in aircrafts, so I don’t see the link with plastic F1 😉

Anyway TH have a very nice after sales department, and you can find spare parts even for very old watches when necessary 👍

My aunt has one of this “cheap” TH F1, and after more than 30 years, her watch is still in perfect condition, so even being the most “low cost” TAG Heuer ever, it’s quite durable 😀

I'm sorry, but plastic f1s are obsolete. Lugs are of similar obsolete design compared to classic look. The same fate could apply to Gen2 lugs as well. And it doesnt matter to me whether they are made of titanium or gold or anything else (the rest is mainly cheap rubber by the way). There are lots of cheap gold watches out there. It's just a cost of the material now, that's all.

I repeat it: when we are talking about the obsolescence of an smartwatch, we are talking about obsolescence in the normal functioning of the watch (it works, or it doesn’t work anymore), not about obsolescence of its aesthetics... which is something very subjective.

Lugs design (and the whole watch) from Gen2 Modular 45 is identical to the Carrera 45mm Calibre Heuer 01, Heuer 02, and Heuer 02 Tourbillon. Maybe you consider this design obsolete, and for sure other people not (at least is different and has personality, it’s not like any other watch!), but these watches will be still running in 30 years, and maybe they also will be called “classic” in 2050 because normal size will be 50mm! 😉

And of course the quality of the material matters when we talk about durability!

BTW, where do you find “cheap rubber” on the Gen2 Modular? 😕 Case is all made by titanium or black ceramic, lugs by titanium, black ceramic, or rose gold; buckles also by titanium or black ceramic, and the only rubber part is on the straps (like Gen3), but you can use Gen2 Modular 45 with a titanium bracelet, or a black ceramic bracelet, or with genuine calfskin straps... If you have complaints about Gen2 materials, then you should be crying for Gen3! 😁

You dont have to repeat it. And who are we? I'm not sad Gen3 owner, nor unlucky or haven't been taken care of by TAG as you keep saying. I'm actually very happy, so you should speak for yourself.

Biver said that the logistics behind Gen2 is very complex. Meaning that it seems like not profitable enough. Their product manager said that people are not interested in lugs. A number of reviews called Gen2 clunky (and I agree that it is). This is my personal view, however its TAG that decided to move on and I think that they come up with a much better product.

This thread was only the find out what TAG watches would fit the straps for the gen 3. I'm tired of buying and selling a new strap collection for every smartwatch release. If I can find a mechanical TAG that fits all bands, including the tight fitting steel band with it's radius fit, then I'll keep my strap collection when the gen 4 comes out, and be happy. I have NO reason to believe TAG will be starting another modular setup for the gen 3, they have abandoned that idea and it wouldn't make sense with this traditional watch layout.

Regarding the connected to eternity program, I admit it sucks its gone. But probably didn't bring in much money for TAG. If I can pay 2k for the gen 3, use it hard for 3 years, then sell it for 40% value on eBay, I will be happy and consider that a decent value for my money.

Yes, I had to repeat it because we were talking about two very different kinds of obsolescence: the end of normal smartwatch operation, or the outdated aesthetic design of any watch. And we were talking about the first one in this thread.

Well if you are happy with the purchase of your Gen3 even if TH have stopped offering a program to combat its obsolescence, then it is perfect... especially for TH, who saves the cost of that program! 😉

Speaking for myself, I am much happier about my Gen2 (and my mechanical modules) relative to the price I paid, than I could be with the Gen3 price vs. product and service ratio: I can understand paying 1650€ for a Swiss, Modular (and future proof), titanium watch... but not paying 1700€ for a Chinese, steel watch, not future proof, which has lost the Modular system and a lot of customization options

Regarding the connected to eternity program, I admit it sucks its gone. But probably didn't bring in much money for TAG

Yes, I think TH were giving the Gen2 owners a better product-price ratio than with Gen3, so not getting as much profit with every watch (and mechanical module) sold. The Gen2 client probably paid a price closer to the cost than now with Gen3

Biver said that the logistics behind Gen2 is very complex. Meaning that it seems like not profitable enough.

Yes, the production and logistics costs of Gen2 Modular were surely higher than those of Gen3, which in addition to not having a program to combat obsolescence, has been manufactured in China. It seems that new TH management have wanted to increase the benefits for each Gen3 sold, because they have also increased the retail price!

Their product manager said that people are not interested in lugs

Of course not! 😁
The price of the lugs was voluntarily disproportionate, soaring! It was the way TH had of being able to offer mechanical modules at a very good price only to the owners of the Gen2, because if you did not have a Gen2 and you wanted to take advantage of that special price on the mechanical modules, you had to buy the lugs separately at a price exorbitant, balancing the situation. Straps yes, but surely nobody in TH expected to sell many lugs separately at those prices: titanium (835€), black ceramic (1250€), rose gold (2650€), and titanium with diamonds (2650€)! The key of the modular system was not being able to buy different types of lugs (at those prices!), but rather that for Gen2 owners it would be very profitable to buy a mechanical module and thus combat the obsolescence of their investments

A number of reviews called Gen2 clunky (and I agree that it is). This is my personal view, however its TAG that decided to move on and I think that they come up with a much better product.

Also a number of reviews called Gen2 the best looking smartwatch (and I agree that it is). This is obviously very subjective.

However its TH that decided to seek a greater benefit for each Gen3 sold, and we are free to buy it or not. You are happy with your Gen3 (which in my opinion has no personality, without the added value of being Swiss Made, and with an expiration date) and I am happy with my Gen2 M45 (which is bulky according to you, but I love it, and with the mechanical modules I don't have to worry about its obsolescence), so ... everyone happy! 👍

I believe the Carrera cailbre 16 will take the interchangeable straps from the new Connected. Since it is 22mm, the rubber straps are not a question, it will fit. The issue is, will the steel bracelet from the connected fit the Carrera case? Who can confirm this? We need a modular setup!

Has anyone tried this yet?

I know that TAG doesn't actually sell a mechanical head as a modular system for the gen 3. If they have a watch that will fit the collection of straps I will have for the gen 3, that would be modular enough for me!

I can say for a fact that some jewelers have made Gen 3 straps fit the pins on the Formula 1 line.
