Received my 1/18th AUTOart McLaren MP4/6, Senna Japanese GP 1991. It comes complete & finished, with very nice details! I get greater satisfaction out of painting and assembling the model kits myself, but it's also nice to buy them ready for display right out of the box. 👍

Nice addition to your collection Albert. 👍

But the way Funko did the beard looks strange to me, it sort of looks like a chin strap. I think they should've made it lighter, more like stubble, as Lewis's facial hair usually wasn't that dark in 2014.

Thanks! 😉

Yes, the beard is certainly thicker than the one Lewis wore in 2014... but they have taken care of details like the earrings, or the British flag under the cap 👍🏼

^Yes, nice details except for the beard being a little off.

I have some Funko Pops too, mostly James Bond related.

But I do have one "Racer". LOL 🙄

Do lego models count? I’ve got 11/12 of the Lego Porsche sets including the big technic GT3RS, but not yet the 963, that’s the theme I try to stick to since I enjoy the building a lot.

Cool. Do you already have the custom Senna one you posted about before?
No, this little Senna is not made by Funko but by a small Brazilian company copying Funko's style. I didn’t find the way to buy it from Brazil 🤔
Finally, official Funko Pop Ayrton Senna figures will be coming soon! 😀

Although sadly they reused the modern F1 cars for his '87 Lotus 99T, so I don't think I'll be getting this one.

I first built this same model kit back in '88 when it was first released. It actually came out before the championship was decided, so I decided to build it as #11 Prost, since I had just finished making Senna's '87 Camel Lotus 99T. A few years later, I bought another McLaren MP4/4 kit, intending to build the #12 sister car. But as mentioned before, when Senna died, I lost my will to make these. The two cars are 36 years apart in age.

One down, two more to go...
Now it's two down, one more to go, as I just finished the Tamiya 1/20th scale McLaren MP4/8. Will probably get to the MP4/7 sometime next year.

More pics in the Ayrton Senna Thread.

Great job @Mspeedster !! 👏🏼 This MP4/8 looks great!! 😍 Congratulations!! 👍🏼👍🏼

Did you paint the parts yourself, or did they come painted? Because the finish is perfect. If you painted it yourself, did you use an airbrush to paint the bodywork?

Thank you @Albert-AMG! I painted everything myself using Tamiya spray paint cans.

The rear wing was especially hard. Because the entire double decker wing is molded as one piece. So I had to paint 3 different colors and mask off the sections very carefully in between the wings. Masking separately 3 times, for each different color.

Congratulations again! 👏🏼👏🏼

That was a lot of hours of work… applying thin layers of paint, waiting for it to dry thoroughly before applying more layers. Did you calculate how many hours it took you to put it together?

It would be cool to see a photo of the kit as it came in the box along with all the paints and tools you used, so that the merit of that final result could be appreciated even more 👍🏼

Thank you very much, I'm really glad you appreciate the work @Albert-AMG! 😘🙏

I started in early Nov., in anticipation of the Netflix Senna series release, finished in mid Dec. Spent a few hours a day, a lot of it was prep work for the paint. So it took many many hours! LOL

I used to own an air brush when I was really into the hobby decades ago. But found with smaller scale kits, e.g. 1/20th, I could get a good paint result with Tamiya spray by using thin and even layers. Other paint brands don't work as well for me, so I only stick with Tamiya. If I were to do a larger scale kit again, e.g. 1/12th, I'd probably need to buy another air brush.

Here's what the McLaren MP4/7 kit looks like unmade next to the finished MP4/8. The MP4/7 is the last of the 1/20 scale Tamiya kits that I bought when Senna was still alive. The problem with making 30 year old plastic kits is the decal sheets yellow, so I bought new aftermarket decals. Also, some pieces may not fit well, as they can warp with age. This takes added work as well.

This pic gives an ideal of the basic tools I use. (Ignore the watch case holder clamp on the right, that's for a different hobby. 😜)

I also spend many hours looking at lots of photos of the real car. Trying to decide which parts I want to accurately recreate and whether to build the kit based on a certain race configuration or a hybrid from various GPs. I decided on the latter for the MP4/8.

Great! Thanks for the info and photos @Mspeedster ! 👍🏼

There is even more work and materials involved than I imagined! 😳 Once finished, and with such a professional result, it becomes a treasure 😍 👏🏼
