Emailed them today to ask if it would fit option 1, Carrera Calibre 5 special edition:-


"I can confirm that the bracelet will not fit the Calibre 5 Special edition watch"

It's pretty clear that the bracelet of the Connected 46 will not fit the Carrera Calibre 5 Special Edition, as the Connected straps and bracelets are asymmetrical, because of the "wing" (basically the cover of the screen drivers), whereas the mechanical watch has symmetrical strap. Also it is safe to assume that the Special Edition, being ...well, hmm, special edition, will not be supported with other straps or bracelets. Most likely you won't be able to even replace the standard black rubber strap once it wears down. It was one of the reasons why I went for the Modular mechanical watch. There you can purchase extra straps or bracelets (plus lugs, buckles, even the smartwatch module).

I decided to go for the 'Special Edition 46mm' in the end. I didn't really use the connected other than just wearing as a watch, I also switched to an iPhone and although the connected works I found the 46mm 1st gen to be unreliable, it would disconnect if I accidently shut the app down etc which I found annoying. Anyway I gave the smart watch thing a go but it wasn't for me. I also have a fitbit surge for exercise which IMO is far better at tracking exercise, they look crap but when I am out running or down the gym it doesn't matter.

I went into the local Tag AD and had a look at the new 45mm and decided I would prefer a slightly slimmer watch so the 46mm looks like it will do the job.

I also like the idea of something 'limited or special edition' although from an investment point of view will probably make no difference to its actual value.

Does anyone know how long the exchange takes (for the special edition 46mm) ? I did mine in a local Tag AD TH Baker (in the UK) and they seemed to think it would take 5 to 6 weeks but that seemed to be a guess. I also asked about a Breitling battery change and was told if they sent it to Breitling it would cost £300, it actually costs £140 (according to 2017 price list) so my faith in what I was told isn't exactly high.

I went to about 10 authorized Tag dealers. Almost all of them had not done the exchange before. I had to search near a higher end metro city to find a dealer that has done them numerous times.
That said, I got mine within 2 weeks.

It's 10atm / 100m / 330 ft according to the specs I got from TH.

Can anyone put up a youtube review of the connected exchange cal 5 special edition, surprised not to see any yet.

It's such a specific item, it's rather unlikely that someone will bother with a review.
I went for option 4, the smartwatch with the ceramic bezel and the mechanical module. I'd say get the Cal. 5 Special Edition if you really hate the wings, otherwise the modular watch is better in about everything else; 45mm instead of 46mm, thicker bezel which makes the watch face even smaller and proportionate, polished ceramic treatment, protruding slightly rounded glass, metal back. Also very important; you can opt for whatever strap you want. The Cal. 5 Special Edition will be available only with the rubber strap and I suspect it won't be easy to replace it once it gets worn out. Additionally, with the modular you can add more mechanical modules, or in the future, if TAG Heuer allows it, maybe even a next gen. smartwatch module.

Thank you for replying so quickly. According to TH I've 2 months left to make up my mind and its a struggle, I like the Cal 5 Special Edition due to the slimmer case and lack of wings, but as you point out the 45mm seems to make more sense long term. Decisions decisions .

However the wings of the mechanical module are totally different from the very prominent ones of the smartwatch module. The are made of titanium, I think, they have a nice brushed treatment and they taper gently towards the strap, so they don't stick out much. They are actually an interesting design between the case and the strap.

That's the direction I'm leaning at the moment, I did like the look of the picture from @CosmosClub with the brn leather strap.

If this would be true, I would consider this an unnecessary and unfair pressure on the customers, which for me would be a no go for this watch. When TH launched the Connected 46 they never mentioned such restrictions. I would understand on the other hand, if they would sell them in limited numbers, but not in such a narrow time window.
Maybe the talk about the 3 months is based on a missunderstanding? Maybe the restriction is only related to the spefic alternative options, which may change over time? Do you think, they would tell you to keep your 1,5k bucks and keep their watches in stock, since you are too late on their offer? Seems somewhat unlikely to me. But well, you never know.

If I remember well, the three month deadline was a condition stated quite clearly on the offer for American customers. I asked if the same was true also for the German market, which is where I made the exchange and the shop assistant told me that there was no such restriction for the German market.

Please see the attached this explains the options open to you for the exchange,

You have a 3-month window to exchange the watch of your choice after the 2 yr warranty expires.

The exchange can be made at any TAG Heuer Stockist (TAG Heuer Outlets can only offer Option 1)

If you wish to make the exchange directly with us, you will need to fill in the attached form send your watch together with the Guaranteed Card and proof of purchase if you still have that. Take a note of the post reference number and return the watch to us. We will take payment over the phone once the watch you have chosen arrives into stock.

Maybe they fear, that people will wait to exchange until their connected breaks down. 😕
Btw. Mr. Biver said somewhere, that the Connected 46 will be worth a lot in the Future, since almost everybody will throw it away meantime (as was the case with the first Macintosh). So to keep it might be the best option. In some decades it will be really vintage. But the exchange watch is made for eternity, as we all know, and therefore will still look like a modern watch, not being that special. I even suppose, they will still use the calibre 5 in 2048 😀

The mechanical modular version was tempting but its a little chunky and I preferred the special edition without the wings. All subjective and all down to personal choice. Why do some think that a replacement strap for the 46mm replacement will be difficult to get in a few years, its an assumption based on what? IMO I would find it hard to believe TAG wont stock any replacement straps for many years as it just doesn't make any sense for them not to, I can get replacement straps for an old Casio G-Shock that went out of production years ago, likewise they still make straps for a 18 year old Breitling.

...because, when I asked for a first gen. Connected 46 strap, they were really dangerously running out, and that was for a normally marketed item. I think the mechanical Special Edition Cal.5 is seen by TAG as an one-off commemorative item, which I seriously doubt that will receive any future support. Of course having a conventional Cal.5 mechanism means there will be no problem to have it repaired and serviced, but I presume that the straps will be an issue. Let alone that the straps are unique to this watch which makes continued support even more unlikely.
