Carrera Calibre 5 runs slow

I bought a pre-owned Carrera and after wearing it a few days, I noticed that it was almost a minute slower than my iPhone. I synchronized my iPhone stopwatch with the second hand on the Carrera and found that it's losing about 15 seconds or so over the last 24 hours. Is this worth being concerned and taking it to get adjusted it is it fairly common to have to reset the watch every few days? This is my first mechanical watch. I don't know the history or if it was on a winder or if it was sitting idle before I got it. Should I keep wearing it to make sure it's fully wound then check again?

Why does my automatic watch not keep accurate time?
The accuracy of TAG Heuer watches depends on several factors, including the type of movement and conditions of use. The following list shows TAG Heuer average tolerance given by the Swiss movement suppliers (based on normal conditions, and full power reserve for automatics):

Quartz movement: between -1 and +11 seconds per month
Standard automatic: between -5 and +20 seconds per day
Chronometer: between -4 and +6 seconds per day

A TAG Heuer watchmaker can carry out a maintenance service to adjust the timing rate of an automatic movement if it is performing outside these tolerances.

You can read in the previous post by Hubert that mechanical watches are not so precise as quartz watches, but your Calibre 5 should be within the -5/+20 seconds per day margin, and your is -15 seconds per day = not normal

You can manually wind it if you want to be sure the power reserve is full. This text is from the TH website:

“As it is the action of the wearer’s wrist that winds up the movement and maintains maximum power, the power reserve will begin to drain if there is not enough movement, causing the watch to stop. You can recharge it by turning the crown clockwise, unscrewed or in neutral position, (minimum 40 times). This will start the watch, giving it sufficient power reserve to function normally. You can’t over wind an automatic watch.”

If you wear it during some consecutive days (with this previous manual winding the first time, to ensure it’s fully charged), and it’s still running -15s/day, then it could be magnetized, and you would need to buy a demagnetizer (there are some at ebay for less than 10€), or take it to the TH Service to be demagnetized, or adjusted if the -15s/day were not due to the magnetism. To verify if your Calibre 5 is magnetized, there’s also a useful app called Lepsi

Interesting app, tried 4 watches, 2 showing magnetism 2 not, one showing none was recently serviced so all good there, will pop by my AD to see if he’ll de-magnetise my watches as he did another for me, apparently hot air hand driers are a menace for auto watches, as are laptops etc. Ta for the heads up.

Tried the app. It said magnetism detected. I read somewhere that magnetism made it run fast. The first reply said -5/+20. I'm about -13 and showing magnetism so I guess I need to take it in. Can anyone recommend someone in the Norfolk, VA area? I don't really want to send it to Tag. I've heard they're slow and expensive.

Magnetism can also make a watch run slow. Had one of mine magnetized from a biz trip, was -20 sec/day. After it was demagnetized, it was down to -2 sec/day. Many ADs have a watch tech who can demagnetize a watch, it's fast and sometimes provided as a complimentary service.

Magnet is a problem nowadays. Basically all the gadgets around us are mechanical watch natural enemy.

So, stay vigilant, people. Take good care of your wrist-hugging friend.

If you search by “watch demagnetizer” at ebay, you will find many offers selling this blue demagnetizer for less than 10€. I bought it and it works, so magnetism is a natural enemy for the mechanical watch, but with a cheap solution 😉

To learn how it works, it’s better to look for a tutorial at youtube “how to use a watch demagnetizer” or similar, because the written instructions included with the device (made in China) are not very clear...

And some people say it’s better to let the watch stop (without power reserve), and then pull the crown to be 100% stopped, before demagnetizing it

I was wondering, every time I approach a hand dryer (especially those Dyson types) with a watch on I wonder is it a good idea?

I was told no, remove it before you P. And refit when you’ve washed and dried. Apparantly.

I’m awaiting delivery of one of these blue boxes, it’s on a slow boat from China, approx £4.55.

Do make sure you don’t burn the house down by leaving that thing plugged in.

I got the blue box last year because my Carrera Cal 5 was running 30-40 seconds slow a day. Used it and now it is 5-15 per day

I leave nothing plugged in unless it’s in use, not enough sockets for all the gadgets in the house.

My wee blue box turned up from China tried a watch out on it and now seems magnetism free -a compass laid on top no longer spins wildly- so trying out the time keeping.
