I'm starting to look through some photos from Watches and Wonders, and I thought that you guys might like to see the "dial" of the new Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph. Yes, a piece of sapphire, with the center section removed, etc.

An interesting approach to the dial, isn't it?

Jeff

Comment on ABTW pointed out the golden wheel on the dial. After seeing it, I can't unsee it. Is there a practical reason behind this major design miss to not finish this wheel so it would match the design?

That's the best (or least worst) photo I've seen of that watch.

Someone just left a comment on my blog about the red 11 on the INDY 500 F1. Apparently there are 11 rows of three drivers on the grid.

I mean... it sounds a bit random, but who knows?

Very random. If they did a Wimbledon (tennis championship) watch, presumably they'd highlight the number 4 because that's how many tennis balls you get in a tube.

Are you actually mocking the important heritage of the Indy500 motor race?

He's totally right about the media, it's ridiculous that there's 1000s of watches released but no one says anything bad about any of them.

Indeed. I really like that Santos Dual Time but also wondered what was inside for the money. Luxury isn’t about the sum of its parts, they say, but for us mere mortals it’s a real consideration now.

Thing is, you are free to buy that or buy another cheaper watch with that movement in it. Depends if you want a 'Cartier' or not.

I mean I get it, I could buy plenty of cheaper watches with Selitta SW200s in them, but I don't cos I like TAG. I can moan about it all I like, but I still buy them. And no doubt when they release an in house Aquaracer I will moan about that cos it's too expensive.

But yeah, I agree you can make a case that they are charging £9000 for a £1200 watch. But there isn't a single big Swiss watch company that offers actual value for money for materials used.

Totally right. I am a big fan of the Santos generally. It’s the opposite of what I usually like, but it really appeals still.

I would like to own a Santos of some nature but it’s at the price point where I am kind of expecting a lot. That’s even considering the price hikes across the board.

Yeah, I agree. Cartier is a bit of a special case though... one of the few brands where history and heritage actually means something.

Absolutely. I am not knocking them, as am a fan as I have said, but the current pricing vs my salary means I question a lot more nowadays. Others won’t blink at £9k and that’s fine too 😀

Oh I agree 100%. I don't want to spend two months salary on an Aquaracer...

Okay, what I mean is when you buy Cartier a huge part of the appeal is that they are very classic and they have a very clear design language and that is probably more important to most buyers than what movement is in them.
