Because the dial opening is a lot smaller than 39mm
I think it's more to do with the case shape and the glass going right to the edge, in theory it should wear larger because there is almost no bezel (outside the glass) and the bezel is the same colour as the dial. I have smaller watches that wear bigger, and 39mm watches that wear much bigger. It's a long time since I tried it on, but I remember just being so shocked how small it seemed for a 'reasonable' sized watch.
I am absolutely loving this watch. I managed to acquire two examples. One for me and one for a friend (who had to back out at the last minute leaving me with an extra). Mine hasn’t left my wrist. The unworn example is going to end up in someone’s hands at under MSRP and make them very happy. What a great timepiece.
