-- From OTD--
Offering the Fragment Formula 1 Limited Edition, with its Heuer 02 movement, certainly sends the message that the Formula 1 is no longer the “entry level” watch for high school graduations and people buying their first “real watch”. With the introduction of the Fragment Formula 1, the collection now covers the entire range from “accessible” luxury to “aspirational” luxury. This is a watch for enthusiasts.
--
This is no tweaking of TAG Heuer’s current models of Autavia or Formula 1 chronograph. This is not an update or a refresh of either model line. Rather, it is as if Fujiwara has pressed the key, “Return to Default Settings”, and in an instant the Formula 1 chronograph that had been evolving over the last three decades was transformed into the ultimate racing watch of the 1970s.
--
To those who will lament the fact that this new Fragment creation is marked “Formula 1” rather than “Autavia”, we can say, “The king is dead; long live the king.” The Formula 1 collection is TAG Heuer’s pure play in racing chronographs, and with the pedigree of the “Viceroy” Autavia and the superb quality of the Heuer 02 movement, the Fragment Formula 1 chronograph wears the crown well.

OTD/Jeff Stein does his best to explain (spin?) the logic of TAG Heuer's product placement. But I highly doubt the majority of the buying public will see it this way. You can not simply press a "Return to Default Settings" and undo decades of market perception. It's like if Honda decided that their Civic line would no longer be entry level and would include a high-end Civic luxury-performance model priced north of $80K. Would I pay $80K for a Civic just because Honda tells me it's no longer entry level? Nope.
But what if Honda put an F1 engine in it and a red sapphire rear window?!

BTW their Civic Type R is a true beast in the track 😲 (FWD cars)

I think if this watch was priced right around $5000 USD (£4000), it would still be very expensive for an F1, but a little more acceptable for me. Since the standard heritage Autavia starts at about $5300. Or if TH had decided to brand it an Autavia, then its price sitting atop the Autavia line might have been easier to accept as well.

If they had branded it an Autavia, wouldn't people have been calling them out because it's clearly an F1 case?

The quality of the watch and movement seems to be at eyelevel with the modern Heritage Autavias. The design of the bracelet is new. The colored sapphire is new. The design as a whole is more or less unprecedented. And of course the Fragment branding must be a very substancial share of the price. From my view it's high but adequate.

It would be interesting to know how this collaboration works money wise..

It’s a buzz creation piece (design and price) and the best Formula 1 design to date IMO.

Some thoughts re: “modern vintage” —

We saw the 60s 2447 NT inspired fragment Carrera with the Heuer 02 movement in late 2018. This created some buzz regarding the vintage look and the Heuer 02’s fit into a 39mm case. Then came the full-on 1960s vintage inspired 160th Carrera announcement 1+ years later in Jan 2020. And there’s been speculation of 2 more on the way in the future.

With the new Autavia’s transition to an “adventurer” line + this Viceroy inspired fragment “Formula 1” — perhaps we’ll see an even deeper vintage inspired design connection of the Formula 1 to its 70s brethren in 2021-22?

Just a guess. But the fragment special editions may be TH’s current way of creating a forerunner design formula — if the example of the fragment / 160th Carrera timeline is to be used. They crowd source feedback by way of enthusiast comments/reactions — well in advance — to help create more accurate modern reinterpretations of the 60s-70s icons down the road.

But the Heuer 02 isn't quite the F1 engine of the line up, they'd need to put in the H02T (Tourbillon) for that. 😉
Having said that, if they continue to release high-end expensive versions of the F1 in the future, it probably will start to change my perception of the F1 as an entry level watch.

I like the Civic Type R and think it's a good analogy to this Fragment Formula 1. IMHO, if this watch had been priced at around $3500-$4000 USD, it would've been appropriately priced similar to the Civic Type R in its given segment. But to me, the Fragment's list price of $6150 is like asking for BMW M3 or Porsche Cayman money for the Civic Type R.

Perhaps some would, but to me a case doesn't define a watch. It's the sum of its parts. I think there's a greater case to be made that the watch should've been branded an Autavia, since it's clearly inspired by the Viceroy and the current F1 case pays homage to the 70s Autavia - which is probably why Fujiwara chose that case. IMHO, they would've been better off simply leaving it totally unbranded, rather than have the "Formula 1" branding on the caseback. If the watch had been a class of one, I might've been able to swallow the price.

There is a spot in the lineup for flat out re editions of old watches (e.g. 160th) but to me this is a brilliant modern reimagining of a vintage watch, takes cues from the past but still a modern design, might even be better designed than the original IMHO. Dial is so clean. I am a huge fan.

Stop trying to pigeon-hole it and just accept it for what it is.

Fragments. Always hard to place 😝

looks like they certainly are trying to push the line upmarket though.

I didn't notice the font on the tachymeter before... I don't care for it.

This looks like a Connected watchface rather than an actual watch.

It’s the same font as in the vintage Autavia

And this clearly shows how silly any non-Connected dial looks on the Connected.
