Might sound like a dumb question, but are these Connecteds waterproof? I'm not talking 'diving' waterproof - but just regular 'can get it wet, use it swimming' waterproof.

What do we think will happen to Gen 2 prices?

Yes, 50 meters, it’s engraved in the case.

Life is more expensive than in 2017.
I paid 1650 € for the titanium with black rubber strap in March 2017, and 3 years later the stainless steel model is 3% more expensive.
That's acceptable in my opinion.
It's a TAG Heuer with the latest technology.
The Formula 1 is quartz and costs 1500 €, that's expensive.

Maybe you are talking about the price of the first TH Connected, but just two months ago (it was still in the TH website) the price for a full titanium case Connected Modular 45 with black ceramic bezel and rubber strap was 1400€. Just two months later, paying 1700€ for a non-modular and just stainless steel (non-titanium) case, is much more than increasing the price by 3%. The third THC may look great, but moving from titanium to steel, and losing modularity, are steps backwards vs the Connected Modular... while price is 300€ forward! 😲

The quartz Formula 1 Chronograph on steel bracelet (not on rubber strap) is close to 1500€, but in 2050 it will be running like today... how many years will last the 3rd gen of the Connected before being obsolete? 5 years? If you consider 1500€ for 30 years vs 1700€ for 5 years of use, you can calculate the price per year you are paying...

To avoid this problem of paying so much money for a watch that will be useless in few years, 1st Connected had the exchange program (for around 3000€ you got two years of smartwatch use and finally a Carrera Calibre 5 “connected to eternity” automatic watch), and 2nd Connected has the mechanical modules, so for 1400€+1600€ you get the smartwatch and a Carrera Calibre 5 automatic watch, or for 1400€+2650€ you get the smartwatch and a Carrera Calibre 16 chronograph automatic watch... so very similar price to just a normal Carrera Calibre 16, which is around 4000€.

But, what happens with the 3rd gen of the Connected when it becomes obsolete? Will it be just a useless device and a waste of 1700€? Does it have some “parachute” system like 1st and 2nd THC?

Not everything is measured with money.
What's the price of having the latest model, using a watch for the first time, or enjoying an improved model from now on?
The price of pleasure, invaluable.

Gen 2 no longer sells.
I believe that Gen 1 was still on sale for a short time after Gen 2 appeared (I could be wrong).

The point of buying a brand like Tag Heuer is for the quality materials, workmanship and innovative features.

The whole concept of modularity, having multiple easily changeable bands made the Connected 45 seem like many watches all in one.

Going from titanium to aluminum, no modularity, no tag studio design app, no analog modules to make it future proof, few band options ... for more money seems like a huge downgrade.

A fair comparison would take into account all the improvements of Gen 3 over Gen 2 (screen resolution, processor speed, battery, heart rate monitor, health & fit functions, etc.), not only the cons.
You don't need to justify why you won't buy it, but it's good to be fair and objective.

As far as I know the mechanical modules (2nd gen.) and the mechanical 'upgrade' program (1st gen) haven't been very successful, compared to the Connected per se, which have been extremely successful (not compared to Applewatch but to mechanical TH watches).
So TH can expect to sell Gen. 3 well without the mechanical options which are just for the watchnerds, most of them wouldn't buy a smartwatch anyway.

In addition the preview in the TH Email Promotion (see image below) shows a promising design of the additional pushers. If they have chronograph functionality with a nice TH 3-6-9 watchface this might be a very cool smartwatch. Then you have the brand and higher production costs because of fair and human workplace conditions in switzerland. I think it might be worth every penny.

I'm following the discussion and my opinion is somewhere in the middle;
On one hand, I think that, without the modular concept or any other concept of replacing the watch with an analogue timepiece, €1700 is a lot to ask for such an ephemeral piece of technology. Particularly considering that, as the situation stands at the moment, Wear OS and Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 processor are often seen more like liabilities rather than assets and the future of Wear OS is somehow in flux.
On the other hand, I wasn't expecting that the modular or trade system would go on for ever and that the market is now used to the idea of a smartwatch. People don't need any longer to be convinced about the concept; they can buy the product on its own merit.
The only problem now is that the two previous Connected targeted not only the affluent, but also more average incomes that could see their money being invested into something that can last. The new Connected will be clearly a luxury item for people that don't mind spending this amount of money now and again the same next year (in case Google makes adjustments and as long as TAG Heuer is willing to continue with smartwatches).

It’s not the case.
Gen 1 was launched in November 2015, Gen 2 in March 2017 and Gen 3 in March 2020. That’s 3 years.

That's not exactly what I meant; of course I don't know the life cycle plans of TAG Heuer for their products. What I meant is that according to journalists and rumours, Qualcomm is set on releasing a finally contemporary smartwatch processor by the end of the year and that Google is planning to take advantage of it to finally improve Wear OS. There is at least a theoretical possibility that these improvements may not find their way to the current Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 models, because the 3100 is such an old design. In this case it could be that the brand new Connected could end up obsolete in less than a year. I don't know in this case if TAG Heuer would prefer to react fast by releasing a new model next year, stay in business with a technologically obsolete product for two-three years or quit the smartwatch segment altogether.
The modular concept would have helped in this case, because they could offer upgrades of the smartwatch modules only. I'd be ok to spend €500-800 this year on a new module and again next year in case of a new module with new processor, but if I buy a new non-modular €1700 Connected now, only to find that in autumn every Fossil will be a lot better than my TH, then I'll be furious.

Gen1 was not waterproof, but Gen2 Modular is 50m (mechanical modules are 100m), and -according to @Ninja1400 - it seems Gen3 could also be 50m... the official info about Gen3 next Thursday 😉

Gen2 Modular stock pieces would probably go to TH outlets, usually with 30% discount for the complete watch (and maybe the mechanical modules, when available?), but keeping retail price for the accessories: lugs, straps, bracelets, and buckles

This was your answer and justification when we were talking about the price increase for the Gen3 vs the Gen2 Modular: a 21% higher price (not a 3%), in just two months.

And, of course, I can understand your subjective reasons to buy the Gen3 at this higher price, but I don’t understand that just two posts later you are asking us to be objective 😲 :

A fair comparison would take into account all the improvements of Gen 3 over Gen 2 (screen resolution, processor speed, battery, heart rate monitor, health & fit functions, etc.), not only the cons.

Because you were not very objective talking about the price increase! 😁 😉 😉

Seriously: we were objectively talking about the already known details to compare Gen3 vs Gen2 Modular: stainless steel vs titanium, non modular, no system or program to make it future proof (there’s no more “Connected to Eternity” motto as it was with Gen1 and Gen2 Modular), 21% more expensive, much less strap options... and all these details are -objectively- steps backwards vs the Gen2 Modular.

Obviously the Gen3 is supposed to have improvements in its smartwatch functions being three years younger, because hardware of these devices is in constant evolution (more performances at lower/equal price... although it’s not the case here), but as the technical specs are still not officially available, we were talking about the already known details, and it seems these details are not seducing some of us to move from Gen2 Modular to Gen3... mainly iPhone users because we can’t connect a second smartwatch to the Wear OS app

This makes me ask: why did TH send a survey to the current TH Connected owners so late, when Gen3 was already designed? TH management says Gen2 Modular was a big success for them, so why were they not trying to also sell the Gen3 to the 50.000 current Gen2 Modular owners? 😕

Just a question @Ninja1400 : do you own the Gen1 or the Gen2 Modular?

Of course, I bought them in day 1, otherwise I could not compare them properly.
Gen3 is a step forward much bigger than Gen2 was compared to Gen1.

Of course they are trying this, that's why they made a survey.
And tomorrow you will see the result...
