Which titanium Carrera?

Two Carrera "racing" models- the Calibre 1887 and the Calibre 36. Both titanium carbide. Both black with red detailing. Both with similar dials and both 43mm.

Yes, the one on the right has the Calibre 36 (El Primero), but it is a more unconventional design- some love it, some don't.

So...which one?

I love the El Primero version which probably isn't surprising since I'm a fan of Zenith's movements but it really makes you realise how small the EP movement was when you see how much dial real estate there is outside the subdials and how close they are together. No doubt at the time they were probably thinking "37mm ought to be enough for anybody". I love what they do with the crowns making them more grip-able for people like me with absolutely no fingernails whatsoever.

...and that's the kicker. Because the movement is so small, the design forces compromises when you put it in a 43mm case

Well, I bought the Calibre 36 and love it.

Actually, the smaller movement means the numbers at 3 and 9 are not cut off which is a 'design feature' I dislike. Also, the change in plane of the dial serves to disguise the movement size.

P.S. Holy thread bump, Batman!

That's very true, it's not noticeable at all in fact!

If I were buying one it would be the calibre 36, but having tried a couple of titanium watches I don’t like the lack of weight so I’m not in the running. More for you guys.

1887 for me, the 36 is a classic, but just doesn't work for me in that size case

I’d go 36.in fact I almost bought one but went with the ‘Grand Carrera’ variant instead. I think that probably the best finished TH i own.

Design-wise, i’m not fully sold with the Carrera Calibre 36 dial. The Carrera Calibre 1887 is more consistent. Both are busy dials but somehow the Calibre 36 doesn’t seem coherent IMHO. There’s the “outer dial” and the “inner dial” I would still love to get one for the collection of a different calibre/movement but the price range is still high just because of the el primero movement. For the right price, i’d probably re-consider 👍
