THE GOOD OLD TIMES

Yesterday I saw a FB post by a German club who posted a picture of a past event from 2019 and then captioned it with "Remembering the good old times". The post had the designated mood "sad".

This made me think about the incredible amount of glorification of the past that the goth scene has. Literally everything was better back in the day:

  • the music was "more real"
  • the parties were "more goth"
  • the clothing was "more authentic"
  • the scene actually "meant something"
  • everything was "less commercial"
  • blah-di-fυcking-blah (enter whatever else you can think of)
Of course, now that I listed these things, I notice that this is not particular to the goth scene, but to human existence itself. Humans don't like change and they tend to forget the negative things of the past, which leads to them only remembering what was good. Most people also stop making new and interesting memories, so in comparison to Little Johnny's shitty diapers and the boss yelling at them, the olden days of the goth club adventures were "sooo much better".

In reality the music was no more or no less "real", you were just 17 and didn't know anything about anything.

The parties weren't "more goth", you just had never seen goths before and you went from "Oh, what is this?" to "Oh, I like this!" to "Oh, this is me!" to "Oh, now I have friends here!" to "Oh, now I belong to this culture!".

The clothing wasn't "more authentic", you just gave a fυck about what you looked like and made more of an effort.

Everything may actually have been less commercial, which meant you only had 1 party or concert every month - or every 3 months. And then you complained about your city sucking and said "nobody ever plays here".

But all this is forgotten. Just like it is forgotten how much of a pain in the ass it was to find the venue in a different city without Google maps. Or how much it sucked to not know when the venue opened, because the flyer/ticket didn't specify it and so you arrived 2h early in mid-January and stood around in the cold till doors opened. Or how everyone who was "more authentic" hated on you for your un-goth appearance. Or, or, or ... you understand my point.

The good old days generally weren't that good. You just don't remember the crap of the past while you hyperfocus on the crap of today. Don't be that person.

Figure out how to make good new days.

That's it from me. See you next week and as always:

Be a man, do the right thing!

I would like to know actually, say I wanted to 'progress' beyond TAG Heuer, but I still wanted carbon and skeleton dials etc, where am I supposed to go? Given that Hublot is like 3 times the price.... is there anything in between? And how is Hublot any improvement? Given that the watch community hates them as well. AP? Well that's totally out of the question, and unobtanium to boot.

I strongly suspect that when Adam talks about 'progressing' beyond TAG he means joining the cult of the 'Timeless Watch' by going to Omega/Rolex.

Seriously though, for someone who likes 'modern' designs (which for the sake of argument includes skeleton dials and carbon cases etc), what are your options if you can't afford RM, don't wanna be laughed at by Hublot haters and you can't afford to buy 20 watches so that you can get an AP Offshore?

One would argue are skelton or carbon modern designs? Ceramic maybe?

Skelton well Zenith & let’s be honest your are getting a better movement.

Ceramic - Omega, Tudor, Zenith again. Maybe Panerai

Carbon - Bell & Ross, Panerai.

Least Hublot have a coherent design language

Yes Zenith is a good call. But for some reason they don't give me wood.

Bell and Ross and Panerai, I like their carbon designs, but they are sooooo expensive compared to their regular ones.

Look no further than TAG's LVMH stablemate. Zenith isn't just classic-looking El Primeros.

I suppose they should be ashamed of themselves, releasing garbage for people with no taste 😉

Or Rado who built their entire brand on ceramic watches and has recently regained some serious mojo with the Captain Cook reissue + line expansion. This one is 43mm.

Oh but Zenith also has plenty of gorgeous classics in the 384 and 386 lineup. They have also cracked the secret code that allows only certain special watch brands to cater to a wide range of tastes!

Yeah I consider the A385, A3817 etc as part of the 384 family as they use the same case.

Just wanted to have an excuse to use the emoji, but I will say that dial of the A3817 is second to none in the 384 family.

I hope to add either one soon.
The blue would be my choice or the black and white panda. Not quite so keen on the tri-colour subdials or the beige lume.

The size of the subdials of the tri-colore is more to my liking but the blue dial in a titanium case of the covergirl is quite a looker.

I had an opportunity to try on most of the regularly available ones (ie not the Cover Girl) and I have to say the one that really got me going was the Liberty of all things.

Nice pic, being N-America limited not within my reach although I must admit I'm more into a "period correct" colourscheme, curious to know whether the patriotic colours play a part for you?

How does Rolex achieve 24.9% market share when they don't have any watches for sale at the ADs?
Answer: It's the chicken and egg, their waitlists ensures they sell every watch they make. People want what they can't have.
