Watchwinder question

Funny... the instructions that Hubert kindly pointed me to expressly warn me not to use rechargeable batteries in my insanely expensive watchwinder. I guess if you can afford £1200 for a winder you can afford Duracells...

My opinion is that real men hand wind their watches 😉
Haha! That's why the Calibre 5 is a real masculine movement, because it gives a little extra resistance sometimes when you handwind it. 😁 Don"t believe the naggers who claim this to be a flaw of the movement!

I need to try another Calibre 5 to know if mines normal or just heavy going...

Yes, in my case I must use 8 huge D size batteries because I keep the watchwinders in a closet that does not have a plug inside... for my peace of mind, and to avoid generating a waste of 8 huge batteries every 5 months, I just bought 8 rechargeable batteries and a charger! 😁
Would be cool to use a power generator to run your charger!

😁 Yes, a generator with pedals, so that the energy that moves the watch -also in the watchwinder- was completely sustainable and of mechanical origin! 😉

Never know, I have some automatics that will jump right to life the moment I pick them up after weeks in the drawer.

My late father's Citizen is like that too. Very strange, I can't have wound it in three years, but I bet if I go pick it up...

Oh and the Carrera is still ticking away, no way it's doing that from six winds, so the winder was definitely doing something.

I use winders for automatics of mine that don't respond very well to hand-winding. I have a few that lose time when hand-wound, but keep chronometer-grade time when on a winder.

There's also the fact that I'd noticed my thumb getting sore from the nearly 10 minutes of winding I did each night before I caved and bought a couple winders 😬

Yeah, wonder if there was some sort of resistance in the gear train perhaps - or just not enough turns on the winder? (Didn't wind the mainspring quite enough to start it maybe)

Maybe I should shut my mouth until I have more watches in my collection 😁 winding is not a lot of work when mostly changing between two watches that rarely run out of power

Yep. I now focus on my manual-winders and whichever automatics respond well to it. Some autos wind up fully with just 10-15 winds of the crown, while others take 30 or so. And, some have quite a bit of resistance in the crown while others wind freely. So, I made the decision to buy a couple of cheap secondhand winders from eBay. Total winder outlay now is about maybe $75 US, for a combined 7 slots. Only problem now is figuring out where to put em as I'm more or less out of room on my dresser between watch boxes and winders :/

I thought it'd be nice to do one of those crazy custom-made watch cabinets but I don't have the space! 😁
