I am truly honored that @Jeff Stein reached out to me a few months ago to write this article in collaboration with OnTheDash. It consolidates all of my research on Senna and his watches into one place. I hope you enjoy reading it.

As we approach the 31st anniversary of the death of Formula 1 hero, Ayrton Senna (on May 1), OnTheDash is thrilled to publish a new posting by @Mspeedster covering the watches that Senna wore during his 10 years in Formula 1. This “Definitive Guide” details the watches worn by Senna and includes over 60 photos of Senna and his watches.

To this day, the phrase “Senna Sempre” (Senna always) captures the passion that Formula 1 fans feel for Senna’s life story and racing accomplishments. TAG Heuer’s newest advertising campaign, “Designed to Win”, is based on a phrase from Senna, expressing the brand’s approach to building watches for racing.

It is especially fitting to publish this “Definitive Guide” on April 29, as it was on this date in 1994 when TAG Heuer and Ayrton Senna agreed to collaborate on a Senna Limited Edition watch, with the watch being introduced in Spring 1995, after his death.

From 1984 through 1988, Senna wore five chronographs from Casio, Seiko and Longines. Starting in 1989, Senna became TAG Heuer’s golden boy, wearing the TAG Heuer patch on his racing suit and a series of TAG Heuer watches on his wrist.

Here’s the quick summary of the TAG Heuer watches worn by Senna 1989 through 1994 —

- 1989 (McLaren) – Super 2000 chronograph

- 1989 to 1992 (McLaren) – two versions of the S/el (sports elegance) analog-digital chronograph, cream and anthracite dials

- October 1991 (McLaren), championship-clinching race – Formula 1 chronograph

- 1992 (McLaren) – S/el chronometer

- 1992 to 1994 (McLaren / Williams) – Series 6000 quartz watch

- 1993 – Series 6000 automatic watch

- 1994 – Prototype of Series 6000 Senna Limited Edition

It was an absolute pleasure to work with @Mspeedster on this posting!! And to be clear, he did ALL the research and writing, and I tried to provide some help along the way with the "production" of the posting.

What an amazing effort from @Mspeedster to take years of postings covering Senna and his watches and distill the essence of those postings into a stand-alone blog-style posting for OnTheDash. There is so much fantastic information on this forum [and other watch forums, as well], but converting hundreds of postings on a forum into one posting on a website is a huge undertaking.

So hat tip and flowers for @Mspeedster . . . thank you for this tremendous contribution to our community!!

Jeff

Yes, big thanks to the members of this community who provided valuable information and images in the Senna threads . . . and to @Mspeedster who contributed so much information himself and then harvested everything provided by other members of the community. A great community effort!!
