My modest collection of 90's watches as of today. Two more, possibly three on the way. A 2000 and a Link in transit. A 4000 still hasn't shipped after 10 days. I don't think I'll see that one and will have my money refunded. It's a shame because I bought it at a great price. Maybe that's why it hasn't shipped. The seller might have realized he sold it too cheap. We'll see.

Had bad luck with two others. A 2000 exclusive was lost (stolen?) in transit and I'm still waiting to get a refund. A 2000 chrono that I had to return because the chrono didn't function. The seller said it did but no. Didn't work.

Amazing!

What is the reference of the gold dial sexy 6000?

Great to see someone collecting these older watches. Looks like you have picked some really good quality pieces here and you've done well to find them with the plating still in good shape. That 6000 is the pick of the bunch for me but they're all nice.
Thanks.
I used to collect them before covid but during covid, sold them off to buy other watches. Decided that was a bad move so started up again, this time focusing on the 2000 and 1500 series. The 6000 and S/EL were a must have but that's probably the only two I'll buy.

Here are some I used to own....

Great collection! Would love to see an updated family picture when the Monaco is back.

Seems neo-vintage TAGs from the 80s/90s are in vogue again! 👍

One thing I'm curious about the 6000 is the gold crown and gold case inserts (between bezel and case).
Are they solid gold? The case back reads "STAINLESS STEEL AND 18K GOLD". I can't find a definitive answer.
Also, how about the hands and dial? I would think the dial is gold plated, not solid.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
From what I've read, the case was a combination of steel and solid 18k gold. Upon its release in '92, the 6000 was positioned as the top of the line model, using precious metals and having an automatic chronometer version. But even the quartz versions used precious metals to make them more premium.

However, I would suspect the dial is just gold colored and the hands might be gold plated.
Now that I own a 6000 myself, I've been studying them a bit more and found this pic. It shows where and how the gold portion is attached to the case.

A shot of my 6000, the latest addition to my collection.
I always thought the rope like look of the leather strap seemed a little weird. But after wearing it for a few days, the strap has definitely grown on me. But the screw system that holds the strap in place I'm less fond of. One of my screws won't come off. I'm afraid to force it, as it might damage the screw. The strap that came with it looks nearly new, so I'm just going to leave it alone.

That 6000 is beautiful. I agree about leaving the screw alone. If the head breaks off, you're in trouble. 🙂

Please don't say that. 😲 The prices are good right now.😉

Thank you! Yeah, breaking the screw head off is exactly what I'm afraid of.

The 6000 is a really good buy. The advert that @HoltzPlatz found (here) shows the quartz model retailed for $1,850 in the mid-'90s. Today, you can pick one up for about the same as the original plastic F1s go for on eBay. Crazy stuff, considering the F1 was a cheap entry level watch, while the 6000 was the top of the line back in the day.

Yes. You're right about that. The 6000 is a good buy. I currently have an ebay offer pending on one. Hope he accepts my offer. All stainless with a blue dial.

Good luck! Sounds like a nice one.

Going back to your earlier question about your two tone 6000 and which parts are solid gold vs gold plated. In taking off my strap (the side where I could get the screws off), it becomes clear that the gold insert on the case is solid 18k gold, as the underside is unpolished gold. Probably in the picture I found above with three 6000s, the gold inserts were taken off to be sold for their gold content. Also, I'm fairly certain the crown is solid 18k gold. Mine has a deep nick in one section of the crown and it looks gold through & through. Another reason the two tone 6000s in particular are great buys, given their solid gold content.

Well, the guy didn't accept my offer and I didn't want to pay his counter offer but no regrets. This chrono popped up on ebay and I bought it for a good price. I'll need to get a strap for it cause the one on it now won't do. Also, the seller stated that the chrono doesn't reset properly. Probably needs to be re-calibrated using the pushers. We'll see.

Ooh, another Senna watch, seen in this pic. Congrats!!!
Although it's unclear if Senna actually owned this one or was wearing it just for a promotional photoshoot. He's seated in his 1990 McLaren 4/5B, sans mirrors, to make sure the watch is in full view. But I've checked photos from every F1 GP that Senna raced, and he never wore that model.

Regardless, he still wore it and it looks pretty cool! 👍
