Honestly I don't think it's reasonable to compare microbrands with TAG (or Tudor, Longines, Breitling etc). LVMH are spending a billion dollars sponsoring F1, obviously that is going to translate into a 'brand' tax. We all know the cost of manufacture is probably 10% of the retail price, but there's a lot of other costs that go into making a brand like TAG Heuer what it is. No one outside of watch forums has a clue who Farer is, or even Bremont (probably). I think £4500 for a C16 F1 is ridiculous, but it's not like you can buy a similar Tudor for £3000.

With all due respect & it’s been mentioned previously, whilst I appreciate your background & being the industry,

The rose tinted ness you have for Tag and recent articles just feel like a paid reporter. Similar to Hodinkee under LMVH, it’s almost cringe worthy.
This is unlikely to make you any happier about the postings that I write, but I will point it out just for the record -- I collect mainly vintage watches but do have several TAG Heuer chronographs in my collection, vintage, neo-vintage and modern / brand new. On the new TAG Heuer watches in my collection, I have purchased each one of them, at the retail price. I have never been paid by TAG Heuer (or anyone else) for any posting OnTheDash.

Unless you enjoy the cringing (or almost cringing), maybe you can just find something else to read.

Now, let's get back to discussing the watches!!

In trying to figure out which brands compete with which brands, I visualize someone walking into the local mall, in search of a watch. The prospective buyer who walks into my local mall looking for a chronograph in the sub-$5,000 range (titanium or steel) is likely to see brands like TAG Heuer, Tudor, Omega, Longines, Breitling and Rolex . . . maybe Tissot and Movado, but I am not as familiar with their catalogs.

The world of Farer, LIV and the other microbrands is an entirely different realm. Same for Sinn and Tutima; larger than the microbrands, but still not in the local malls.

I continue to believe that $4,600 and $4,800 is a reasonable price point for the new Formula 1 chronographs.

When I first saw the CBZ2086 I thought it was a lime kinda colour but it's actually just yellow isn't it? I kinda wish it was lime green, that would be lovely.

A prospective buyer walking into a mall willing to drop £4k on 44mm titanium chronograph with a Sellita movement - is someone in the know on watches. They’ll know of Longines, Tissot being lower & they’ll know Tudor, Omega & Breitling being priced above. They’ll equally know Tags standing & how they are perceived. Either a massive fan or equally know they need a good deal to purchase.

ADs will have a hard sell to the general public (those non watch guys) who walk into a shop wanting to get their 1st proper watch. The older F1s maybe & I’ve been in my local Tag Boutique even times to witness this.

Maybe the new solar F1s coming will be the gateway for many.

Put it this way you love Tag you love racing, you love watches, you have 4-5k to spend, I edge my bets the glass box chrono, even the 42mm chronos, & potentially the 44 chino sports will sell more than these.

No I enjoy reading, discussing & having an opinion about watches. Not for the 1st time you’ve been questioned on being overtly one sided.

I tend to write and post about the watches that I like, so you won't see me covering the ones that I don't like. That's one of the nice things about being independent -- I write about watches, people and topics that I like, instead of being charged with rewriting the daily press releases to try to look like journalism. Just for a change of pace, maybe you'll enjoy some of my postings about Breitling, Berneron and LeCoultre!!

This one seems very popular, which surprises me a little bit. There's a lot going on here...

Unfortunately I’m not a fan of those brands as much. But thanks for the offer.

Now, let's get back to discussing the watches!!

This^^

Now it looks kinda lime again....

Definitely looks yellow from here. I’d say more lemon than lime.

Put it this way you love Tag you love racing, you love watches, you have 4-5k to spend, I edge my bets the glass box chrono, even the 42mm chronos, & potentially the 44 chino sports will sell more than these.

So that raises the question of who is going to buy this. I suspect it’s designed to appeal to millennial racing fans. Guys who’ve got a bit of cash, love watching F1, touring cars, rallying, whatever. Want something that’s fancy, makes a statement but isn’t an old man watch, something to wear instead of their Apple Watch. I see about 10k of those people at goodwood, silverstone and the ring every year.

I’m looking forward to trying one of these on. Don’t think I’ll be buying it, but maybe I’ll fall in love.

Thinking about it, we think the next gen of quartz chronographs will be solargraphs right? So they are going to inhabit that £2500-3500 kinda space aren't they, so it makes sense for autos to be more...

But then what does that leave that's genuinely 'entry level'? Will they stick with the now very old looking WAZ1110?

Although even that is £1550 on a bracelet... I guess 'entry level' for TAG isn't going to be £1200 any more then...

Probably CW Ward or Farer now for Swiss Entry

I'm just saying that solargraph quartz is obviously going to be dearer than old fashioned quartz, and it doesn't make sense to try and sell autos and solar quartz at the same price as it doesn't fit the message that autos are 'special' and 'desirable'.

C Ward are already advertising on TV etc. I wonder how much longer before they start getting ideas of 'growth' and 'moving up'?

Probably when they figure out that selling 3 watches at £6000 makes more money than selling 5 watches at £3800
