I like the dial, strikingly similar to the 60s original and better than their current Intramatic automatics. I love that it’s a manual wound. But they kept the same case which is way too thick. Makes no sense to me.
They kept the case and lug proportions of the 36mm original. The drawbacks are obvious. The lugs float above the wrist, really annoying. Photo of W&W of the automatic:

if TAG Heuer would keep the 36mm Carrera proportions in their re-issues we might have the same deal. The lugs of the glassbox case wrap around the wrist beautifully though. The details aren’t details.

It’s a cool, fun watch. The sort of design for which you’d be happy paying EUR$5k or so, given that it could slip out of fashion very fast. EUR19k? 😲

Rolex help please, if anyone has time?

I've become the custodian of my recently deceased father's Submariner:
DSC_0948.JPG


And I need to do a couple of things:
Firstly, I need an extension link for the strap - there's several on ebay (for 3 figure prices!) but if anyone knows a reliable seller I would appreciate a link to their shop.

Secondly, while recently service it has a 'Hessalite' (my father's description) crystal, which he had fitted for cost reasons. I'd like to have it fitted with a 'proper' crystal and the movement checked. I could just take it into a Rolex AD (which is a likely path) - but would anyone have any advice either contrary or in addition to this plan?

I would send it to an independent watchmaker (not sure where you are based, but if the UK, I can recommend someone), and ask them for a full service but keep original parts as much as possible, especially bezel, hands and dial. They should also be able to source you an extra link for the bracelet. 3 figures sounds over the top. Regarding the crystal, I would ask for replacement with whatever should be original to the watch. I'm not sure what reference this is (number will be between the lugs if you remove the bracelet), or when Rolex started putting sapphire on the Sub, so can't say for sure that a plexi crystal isn't correct, but again, a good watchmaker can advise you here.

I was under the impression that Rolex were a bit better with looking after older watches than others (eg TAG).
Yes - I'm in the UK.
