But it doesn't seem right on a fundamental level that you can't enter a tennis tournament if you're not willing to do press interviews.

They are the rules of the tournament if you want a shot at winning the prize money. She signed up to the T&Cs.

I know, but what I'm saying is, it doesn't seem quite right to me. It should be about tennis first and foremost.

It’s such an emotive topic and no ones views are right or wrong. I do think she could maybe have handled this better (or whoever is advising her) by doing this Pre tournament rather than in the middle of it in the worlds gaze. Maybe that’s what she wanted, but it doesn’t correlate with not wanting to be a distraction.

But I do agree it should be about tennis. But what next. F1 drivers not doing interviews - I suspect they are contractually obliged to do those also.

there’s also the case that competitors could see she is getting an advantage by not doing them and decide the same. So I think her withdrawal and some time to focus on her own Heath is the best way forward for now.

Maybe there is scope to structure these agreements a bit better going forward, in all sports. Make it so that people can opt into these commitments (which their own sponsors will want them to do also). If they don't then the prize money they receive will be reduced perhaps. But I don't feel it should have any bearing to the result on the court/pitch/track/course.

Many(all?) F1 drivers- and many other formula - are contracted to attend sponsor events too, smile and press the flesh, he who pays the piper calls the tune.

I wonder if Tag Heuer will come out and publicly support her as has Nike,Mastercard and Nissin Foods?
They have. It was in the CNN article:

Swiss luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer said that it supports its brandambassadors "in triumph but also during challenging periods."
"Naomi is going through difficult times and we truly hope to see her back soon. She is a great champion and we are convinced that she will come out of this period stronger, be it professionally or personally," the company said in a statement

Naomi’s sponsors are rallying behind her. These issues shouldn’t be taken lightly. We’ll see how these pans out. Hopefully everything in a better light 👍

They shouldn't, you are correct, but the issues need to be genuine, as has previously been mentioned in this thread.

Covid and its non-medical impacts, in particular, has put the spotlight and mental health but that does mean that, sadly, there are those who would take advantage and abuse the use of a 'mental health condition'.

To be clear, I am not, for one minute, implying that is the case with Naomi but it is important to keep a balanced perspective and not just blindly believe everything that is written in the press/media/internet.

I wholeheartedly agree with you sir @Mr_Orange 😀 The doubt was whether Naomi’s sponsors will continue to back her up, I guess they did after all 👍

Naomi's sponsors have no choice.
Speak against someone who even remotely mentions that they are dealing with Mental Health issues and you are doomed to the most severe public scrutiny and vilification on Social Media and in the press until you are left scrapping any remaining public trust and credibility off the footpath.
No longer can we voice what we really think and want to say.😒

*I do admire @Mspeedster for having the guts to share with us his love of Heuer / Monaco race day girls.
We need more of that honesty around here and not being afraid of sharing things which might go against popular believe.

I'll start... I don't really like silver watches. There you go, I said it!! ::stirthepot::

Correct until when or if the time comes where it is shown that she was pulling the wool over everyone's eyes.

Seconded. They don't do a huge amount for me and I fail to understand the cult status surrounding them.

More please 😁.

Not sure how this Naomi Osaka discussion took this tangent... 😗
.. but since it was brought up, I was just thinking of how these outfits reminded me of vintage Heuer boxes. LOL 🙄

I might have to take credit for lowering the tone of this post. The Cops in the background are having a great old time patrolling this event. Aussie cops if I’m not mistaken?

Finally someone who isn't afraid to say what most people are thinking but not prepared to say.

Totally agree that if your point of view doesn't reflect that of the Left you are inconceivably wrong and made to feel like that way.

Well, off you trot back to your cult, then 😉
