Amazing watch. That's a very high price, but I can see it making sense for some

Seems to me that Reddit wouldn’t be the best place to try and sell a watch with such a price.

And sold! As usual the dink has no problem selling overpriced vintage watches.

Pretty sure there's a bit more going on. Plenty of discussion about this sort of thing elsewhere so I won't derail this thread, but do some reading about auction results and Hodinkee over on Omega Forums.

Thanks. Do you have a link?

Latest / most egregious example was that Phillips auction a few months ago, where commonly-found modern Rolexes were sold at ~30%+ premiums.
Thanks- interesting thread. I’ve never been interested in those big name auctions, but not for these reasons

Me neither, but then you also start wondering how certain dealers seem to be able to get 2 or 3x market value for the watches they sell, when normal dealer pricing is maybe 20% above market.

Doubt people are laundering money through a 8k watch as just not enough cash involved for effort. Seems to me that there is a lot of dumb rich money out there. They feel very safe going to a well known dealer and Hodinkee is the most well known of all. They probably know it is overpriced some but they also feel safe they aren’t buying a fake.

A rare opportunity; auction 31 October 2020, 10:30.

Lots of interesting pieces, a black and a white OB, low estimates on a blue Daytona, great looking Cortina, a very sharp looking AMI listed for 2-4K etc. Looks like a private collection sell off.
The estimate on the 'Viceroy' Autavia is too low. It's listed as a Viceroy but it's actually an early mark 3 ridged markers Derek Bell. With bracelet and presumably box but a lot of aftermarket of those.

Good spot, wonder if it'll go low. These don't trade for huge premiums on Viceroys anymore though; figure on bracelet this one is maybe 5k as it'll need a relume (and looks maybe a bit polished, to my eye)

That's the thing, it's not just one watch at a time. One 8k watch isn't much, but ten is.

Also, have you ever spent much time with someone who's that kinda rich? They're cheap as hell - many got to be that rich by scrounging every last cent they have. So why would they spend $30k on a Submariner that's commonly available for even half that, if you're willing to pay the regular markup....

I have spent time with those folks and some are and some aren't. I actually think that the laundering/moving money thing is happening at auctions especially with new rolex 2x to 3x over what you can find gray market. It makes absolutely no sense. I just think it isn't happening in the dealer market for a 10k or under watch. I feel like certain folks are more comfortable paying over market from a dealer since they trust what they are buying (rightly or wrongly as I have seem some messed up watches sold by reputable dealers). Hell maybe I am wrong but that is the way it seems to me.

Wow, very impressive knowledge. I don't think I will ever be able to do such an assessment.

The "Derek Bell" Autavia was sold for EUR 2'600.-. Seems somebody made a bargain there.

There would be auction house fees to add on presumably, so maybe the actual price paid was more in line with the market?

30% on top, with the bracelet though (and box?)-still a very good price overall. Terming it a 'viceroy' probably didn't help. 🙄

Yes, they take 30% "buyer's premium" as they call it. Box is included in this lot, but no papers mentioned.

I saw a Siffert go at auction for US $5k, even with premium it was a good value. It had a bracelet too.

The cushion-case Autavias aren't the most desired models these days and great deals can be had...
