It will be just over a year since Jack Heuer's Autavia of the 85th anniversary came out, well, my question is, why with a limited edition of 1936 pieces are still in several AD of the world for sale? The clock can be considered very beautiful and with history. its out Omega or another brand with that limited circulation would have been sold out for some time.

Not that many TAG buyers know who Jack Heuer is or want an Autavia. I'd estimate the market for the JH85 was half as many as they made, at best.

Also I don’t think, given the full RRP that there was enough ‘special’ about it. Other than a few cosmetics on the dial is there anything that different about it over the many other variants? They should have made 85 in white gold 😁

I think numerous limited editions of the Autavia did not help things, and most had more tweaks that just the dial making them a little bit more special.

The dial is lovely, but I think for many one of the most offputting things of the Autavia is the thickness of the case. Some people like a watch that sits high on the wrist, but they are the minority I would say, and a thicker watch just makes it less versatile, so again the market potential shrinks.

I would definitely agree here. As a new owner of the JH85, I became disappointed by the number of LE models, thus spinoffs of the birthday edition that have been produced. When one purchases an LE model, one is under the assumption that its special (which it definitely is) and would not expect limited editions of the LE to be produced. With that said and done I am very happy with my JH85 as its the purest version of the original inception as JH intended. I do also think the other various editions are also very intriguing and beautiful but undermine the LE market and cloud the meaning of what an LE Heuer stands for. In my opinion, this surely has something to do with the lack of sales for this model....just my 2 cents.

Did tag heier say that the jh85 was going to be the only LE when they issued it?

I kind of get what you are saying but small batches of LE around a limited core product range is going to be the way tag heuer and many watch brands work going forward. There was an interesting video posted where jc biver discussed it.

Seems to work ok for omega

Yes, I understand your point but however you look at it, it will have an effect on the sales of the core LE products as is the case here. In my opinion, had there been just one version of the JH then they would no longer be readily available at the AD's.......That said, this is my perspective and I'm sure there are contrasting opinions.

There are often complaints on yhe sister Omega forum about too many LEs, especially Speedmasters. They seem to be announced almost monthly!

I’m not sure if the complaints are down to fears of dilution or simly people a pissed off they can’t keep up or get hold of them.

Personally I think an LE needs to be something unique and special - not just a slight variation with little wlae to justify LE status except the designation.

TH seem to make too many, and in some cases Omega not enough.

You are right. Regardless of what JCB said. Simple fact. If the peoduction and seperation was guagwd closer to demand then there would not be a surplus selling at substantial discount. Part of the attraction of LEa for collectors/watch nerda must be relative scarcity. An LE should on theory help maintain the investment so that the outlay at least stays with the market value. If LE after LE bombs then the whole LE concept is diminished as an effdctive sales tool. They simply become ‘other’ options in the wider range.

Agreed! However the situation is perceived, I for one would not buy another LE from TH. I really love the one I have but disagree with the TH practices around LE models. In the end, they lose customers like me.

Works OK for Omega because they release one per year - two max, and then only if there's a significant event. TAG put these out every other month, and only one had any actual meaning (the Siffert)

For me, as an owner of both the standard reverse panda Autavia and the JH85, I find the JH85 silver dial to be dull and very hard to read in most lighting conditions. A lot of pictures of the JH85 online convey this as well. The hands blend in too much with the dial. In certain light the sunburst effect on the dial is beautiful, but to me overall legibility is more important.

Check out this photo by Watchonista. The Autavia is def one of the nicest chronographs out there. You can argue about case diameter, thickness etc. but in the end it’s simply a stunning watch. Unfortunately it’s very much for people in the know. For some reason TH has marketed the Carrera as the racing watch over the past decades, overshadowing the Autavia and it’s true racing heritage. The Carrera then again has been spread so wide the message is blurred. Oh and then there’s the Formula 1 watch, heavily marketed with Max Verstappen. They should really scrap that line imo.
No brand’s racing heritage is as profound as TH’s but it seems they simply can’t get their assortment and communication right. Omega does that a hell of a lot better.
If you’re in it for the value or investment, stay clear of TH, that’s for sure. But Omega also wouldn’t be my bet. Way too many LE’s.
Despite all of the above and however happens to own the brand I’m in it for the heritage. No matter the value now or in the future.

You are very right indeed. the racing heritage is what drew me to TH in the first place and that's what I see when I look at my autavia. yes, some say too thick, legibility is a problem etc.. but that's the same with every model watch, there are always some who dislike certain aspects of a design. I absolutely love the thickness and size of my JH85 and the legibility is better than my Daytona. As for the LE issue, yes I think TH should spend more time focusing on evolving the lines they have and stand 100% behind their LE's and not allow them to be reinterpreted with slight changes and be labeled again as LE watches. furthermore, too many limited editions dilute the brand. Unfortunately getting a limited edition TH is not much different from buying a standard model.

Don't know if it's the editing, but that patina on the leather strap is amazing!

My strap is much paler and not as dark/caramel/nutty as the one in the picture. Maybe there's some secret trick to get a bit darker leather?

I just noticed that some CBE2110 standard Autavia's for sale on Chrono24 have the chrono minute subdial with minute markers iso the original 5min markers. So in line with all the later LE's. Is this a recent thing? Maybe I missed something. Might be worth chasing a reasonably priced 'Mark I' then 😗

If I'm not mistaken you're indeed correct! The standard Autavia was delivered with the five-minute markers on the chronograph minute hand and the JH 85th edition came with a standard configuration. This was later changed and the standard Autavia's produced today have the new dial. No idea whether this will affect future prices, but I know that I won't ask for a new, updated dial on my next service!
