TAG's insistence on the running seconds non-subdial is really starting to pull their designs down. Without it this would sing. With it it just looks unfinished.

And yes the white date wheel is just lazy too.

The OG CHN 1158 had a white/silver date background (and sometimes black). So it's probably a nod to that? But I'll take a black background instead please 😀

Sorry but that running second hand has ruined it
And I also would prefer flat subdials, like in the original watch. I don't like those bulging subdials (I mean the protruding bezel of the subdial) on any of these new glassboxes 🤔

Ooh, I like that and look forward to seeing it. ‘Gold Duke’ would complement my Ice King perfectly

Another pic. This one was accidently posted earlier in the year and later taken down by the poster on IG.

Tag website does not mention steel and says 'without bezel' but this looks like steel and the old spec sheet said it has a steel bezel.
No, that's just the edge of the glass crystal. The new glassbox's crystal sits directly on top of the case. Which is a little different from the old heritage Heuer glassbox.

In these pics you can see it's the domed crystal's milky ring reflection effect, not a steel bezel.

Right, the original had both white and also black date wheels. I'd prefer the date in black, but the white wouldn't stop me from buying one. Overall, I think it's a gorgeous tribute to the original.

But does it beat the original? I think not.

Considering it's also priced not far off from your average 1158 CHN, I'd say it's a loser.

From a knowledgeable collector's viewpoint, buying an original 1158CHN over this tribute is a no brainer.

However, I do think that TAG Heuer has done a good job with capturing the spirit of the original. Better than the H02 Dark Lord and as good (if not better) than the new Skipper - IMHO. In the well heeled segment of $20K+ watches, I can see this doing well for TAG.

But this brings me back to my pet peeve about TAG's current reluctance to do 1x1 copies of their Heuer legends. If TAG had made a more faithful re-issue, like the 60th Anniversary Panda, I'd be much more tempted to buy one; even with the price being within striking range of an original. While the vintage original will always have the greater provenance, they're not very easy to find. Especially compared to walking into an AD and just getting one of these on the spot. This is why I'm perfectly happy with a Monaco CAW211P vs. going the extra mile for a 1133B original.

Another example is Omega's Ed White 321 re-edition. Its retail price isn't that far off from what vintage Ed Whites go for. But the new one is so hard to get at retail that they actually trade above the vintage originals on the aftermarket. Proof that if faithful re-editions are done right, they can be quite desirable.

I've passed on this one. Had it ben a more faithful heritage model (even a 42mm Elegant case), I would have purchased it. But not in this configuration.

If TAG had done it in a 42mm Elegant case, it would've been very similar to the Bamford x Wes Lang.

If they really wanted to do I properly it could have been with a Calibre 11.
Charged about 10k less

For 10k less, it would need to be stainless steel.

TAG actually already did exactly that, with the 2017 Ronnie Peterson re-editions (Sweden Only), 40 in stainless steel, 2 in gold (1 auctioned, the other gifted to Cristiano Ronaldo).

If only those had been made in larger numbers and released globally <sigh>... 🙁

Video by T+T.
Friends, I really can't explain it. When I consider many of the parts that make up the new glassbox (all of the variants), I start to like it. Then I see it all together as a package and it does nothing for me. Then I see a photo of it at a certain angle and like it again. Then I see another photo/render and dislike it. Then I see a Tudor and think "I'd rather spend my money on that." Then I see wrist shot photos of the new glassbox in different scenarios and both like and dislike it equally depending on the photographer's lighting and composition talents. Then I see a TH render from their website and think, "totally dislike that weird pie pan dial. I'm out." Then I try one on at my local boutique, like it a bit more again, and consider getting one. Then I go home right after and forget that I even liked it at all.

I guess I like it when Dempsey wears it, but I just don't personally want one. The recent Porsche one is for sure the best.

Holy smokes, it's $21k? Who is this for? Celebrities? Even Hubert passed, and he owns more than the museum.
