Well, yes.... but according to Jack Heuer's book it was more that he didn't want to wear an Omega because he didn't want them to use his name to sell watches. Which is ironic. And, let's not forget TAG never used McQueen's name while he was alive as he probably wouldn't have let them.

Congrats Anthony! That took a while, you were certainly right about Rob getting his first even though you ordered before him. I'm sure it was worth the wait.

Thanks Michael

I always knew it would take a little while to get it from the States. Firstly my AD said it would be a week to arrive to him. Then another 5 days for my Buddy to send it via DHL. But in the meantime I found the Monza which I opted to get sent to my guy in NJ.

Then if that wasn't long enough I let my buddy Doug do the review on the F1 before shipping both to me.

Once Doug sent the package it was 5 days from NJ to Melbourne. DHL certainly are fast.

I know you guys really don't want to acknowledge this... but he certainly wasn't 'head over heels' with the Monaco.

I don't know which book you're quoting. There are obviously slightly different versions & views of the story. I referred to Nunley's book, as he was the movie's prop master. Jack Heuer probably has his own version, but he wasn't there for Steve's selection.

SMQ rightfully chose the Heuer Monaco (his own choice) since he wanted to have the “Siffert look” but didn’t want the Autavia and wanted something different thus the Monaco and conveniently it was also the one with “backups” so win-win for actor and movie props. Both the answers seems to fit in the stories 👍👍

In any case, my point was that the Monaco wasn't selected specifically for marketing back then. It was chosen as it fit a part in a movie, which over time grew into legendary status. McQueen & the Monaco are now beyond reapproach, whereas we don't know what will happen with Max and the Orange F1. Will it be a favorite on his wrist? Or simply one of many TAG Heuer watches he's worn throughout his career?

I just want to add that Lewis Hamilton also wore alot of TAG Heuer’s back then during his stint in McLaren but probably when the time comes (ripens) or in the right twist, TAG Heuer will be able to use those when he retires or his status becomes old and legendary. I’m sure the orange dial F1 will be called “Verstappen” by alot of his fans, I’m not just sure if it will achieve legendary status like SMQ Monaco. 😉

Jack Heuer's autobiography, where he acknowledges he wasn't there but 'relies on hearsay from Nunley and Derek Bell'.

I don't associate any particular TH model with Mika, Kimi, or Lewis. So I really don't know if this Orange will come to be associated with Verstappen or not, perhaps here in our tiny little group, but worldwide? Who knows...

Just for comparison, here's Nunley's account, which differs from Jack's.

My personal feeling is that Jack likes to play up the Monaco's underdog story and that having extra stock (due to poor sales) ironically helped its selection. Certainly makes the story more colorful.

But anyone who's read up on McQueen knows he was particular about his wardrobe and very controlling. If Steve had wanted to wear a Carrera or Autavia, I'll bet my next pay check that Jack would've done whatever it took to make sure there were enough watches supplied to the movie.

BTW, I'll add that Nunley's book explains that Steve was also selective about which patches would be on his race suit. He chose not to use the Marlboro patch, even though Siffert wore that patch. So if Steve had wanted to wear another watch brand, they simply could've replaced or removed the Heuer patch.

Well for Kimi and Fernando, there are certainly are 😉

Max just won the 2nd race of this season. 😗 Let’s just wait for him to become World Champion first then we revisit this discussion 🙄

Yeah, but I don't associate those watches with them. It's just marketing to me. OTOH, Senna wore his S/el all the time (and later his 6000), on and off the track.

For example, what I mean is if someone says the "Kimi" or "Alonso", I don't believe there's any consensus in the watch community of what that watch would be.

Agree on marketing but alteast in my country they are so that makes it a reality for me 😉

A quick google search
“tag heuer kimi” or “tag heuer alonso”
then click on “images” and you’ll see what I mean 👍

If those watches are the "Kimi" and "Fernando" to you, that's all good. 😀
Personally, if I owned this Orange F1, I'd give it the "Verstappen" nickname for myself. But I was thinking about it in terms of the broader watch community in general or at least the broader TAG Heuer watch community.

If I google search "tag heuer brad pitt", I get images of the Monaco and Carrera. Does that make those watches a "Brad Pitt"?

I get that TAG Heuer had some past models that were named after certain F1 racers, just like they have for Max currently. But that's no different than the Senna tribute watches they pump out each year. For me, there needs to be something beyond just being an ambassador for the brand.

Rob this is not a true 22mm lug width.
I tried my 22mm Connected Orange strap on to see what it would be like and it's a really tight fit.
I would say this is 21mm without measuring with digital callipers.

Orange dial and Strap look really close in colour.

Do you not care for the OEM strap Anthony? For me, it's one of things that attracts me to this watch.
(FYI, my F1 Gulf is listed as 21mm by TAG's specs, but it's 21.46mm by my own measure. Suspect this one is the same.)

No No....I really like the OEM I was just looking at other options. It's very comfortable for me.
