Yeah, but I don't associate those watches with them. It's just marketing to me. OTOH, Senna wore his S/el all the time (and later his 6000), on and off the track.

For example, what I mean is if someone says the "Kimi" or "Alonso", I don't believe there's any consensus in the watch community of what that watch would be.

Surely the watch with KIMI RAIKKONNEN on the dial would be the Kimi watch...

And Alonso also had his own watch (an Aquaracer), Hamilton had two or three watches, definitely an Aquaracer and a Carrera, maybe another one.

BTW, I'll add that Nunley's book explains that Steve was also selective about which patches would be on his race suit. He chose not to use the Marlboro patch, even though Siffert wore that patch. So if Steve had wanted to wear another watch brand, they simply could've replaced or removed the Heuer patch.

Maybe you are right, I probably shouldn't have taken Jack's words as gospel. He also did say that SMQ had a hissy fit about the fact that they gave Monacos to members of the crew and they had to create invoices for them to placate him - I didn't really understand that bit and why he was unhappy that they were using his name? I don't get how giving Monacos to the film crew was exploiting his fame. It is a fact though that he didn't promote the Monaco until after he was dead though right?

He didn’t want brands to exploit his fame. I suppose Siffert persuaded him to wear Heuer as that’s what racers wore. Apparently he never wore a Heuer again. He was a Rolex and Hanhart guy.
the 20 something Heuer watches on set all ended up with the crew, including the 6 McQueen Monacos. This is also the source of the famous Derek Bell ridged markers 1163 Autavia. Contrary to popular belief that it’s a MH, like factory black dial pre-Viceroy Autavias were, Bell’s is a T. There isn’t a single MH Autavia on the Le Mans invoice. Makes sense as these where racing watches.

These are just like the Senna tribute watches. I know some people will relate to a watch that has a racers name on it, but for me that's not enough to think of it as "their" watch. If Kimi or Fernando constantly wore these on race day it would be different, but from what I recall, they just wore whatever TH marketing wanted them to, just like the RedBull drivers do these days.

A bit funny that McQueen didn't pick the Omega because they might use his name but now Tag have had his name and face blasted over billboards for the better part of 40 years.

Exactly my thoughts.... and to me the fact that he didn't actually 'promote' the watch while he was alive, but his estate lease his image to TAG after his death kind of undermines the whole Steve MCQ loved the Monaco angle. It's not like with Senna where he actually wore the SEL for years...

Heuer was insignificant in the US market in 1970. Mcqueen might not even have heard of them at the time.
He was already famous alive but received cult status after his death. Le Mans is a bad movie and flopped but it also received cult status many years later. Throw the Monaco into the mix and of course TAG Heuer will try to capitalize on that. I’m sure the offer was too good to pass up for the family. Chad is big on motorsports so he probably like the idea anyway.

Wouldn't it be more honest to say that 'Michael Delaney' wore a Monaco in Le Mans? It seems like SMQ didn't wear the Monaco outside of the film so it obviously wasn't like he was in love with it. It was a prop to him like any other prop in another film would be.

Sure but it’s all marketing and showbizz.
Same deal with Panerai and Stallone. Or Omega launching a Bond LE celebrating a movie in which Bond actually wore a Rolex. Or Hillary not wearing a Rolex on the summit on Everest but later signing a sponsorship deal with Rolex so 99.9% of the world now thinks he did wear one. And the list goes on.

Exactly. All these watch tie-ups are just BS.

If you like the watch, buy it and f*** the story. If you don't like the watch, the story doesn't matter.

We love the fact Patrick Dempsey bought a vintage grey Monaco (all class that dude) even before his TAG Heuer ambassadorship. But would he have bought one without the MCQ link? It’s complicated.

I’m actually following this line. All of these are hyped-up marketing-publicity. SMQ’s Le Mans movie was a flop (at that time) Even the Heuer Monaco didn’t sell well during the 70s (again at that time) But now they are cult status (probably because of media hype) You can’t simply dismiss anything right now since “in due time” they may or may not achieve that unthinkable status. “Time will only tell” 👍

It’s also like fine wine, usually the best ones needs to given “ageing & time” 😉

And SMQ only wore the Heuer Monaco in the film. Then Celebrities get paid for wearing a watch, on and off the cameo/track. So even Senna can also be said to be guilty in this. Hard to say which one is truly authentic and who is truly passionare given all the cloud of money, publicity and social media. 🤔

I agree.... was Senna totally in love with the SEL or was it anything to do with the fact that Ron Dennis and M.Ojeh owned the company? Who knows...

I think in part both. Senna wore his all the time off the track and later stayed with TH when he moved to Williams even though TH didn't sponsor that team. I also recall that Schumacher, Alesi and some other non McLaren drivers wore the SEL, so it was popular with F1 drivers in its time.

Incidentally, the making of the movie Le Mans took such a toll on McQueen that he never raced again. Ironic that the movie that was his love letter to the sport ended up killing his passion for the sport. As for the Monaco, he still chose it as his character's watch for the movie. I never said he was in love with it, but it's not like it was forced upon him - according to Nunley.

Was this around the time all drivers on the podium were given a watch to wear during the presentation?

Not sure, but I think before. I noticed the SEL ana-digi on several F1 racers in the early 90's on and off the podium, and off the track. If they were given watches for photo ops, I would think TH would want to rotate through their line up, not just stick with the SEL ana-digi.

That's a good point, he did keep wearing the 6000 when he was at Williams. But then the family sold his image to Hublot and another brand (I forget who) which kind of spoils it a little bit...

Arguably, Hublot did the colour scheme better.

I like the watch... well I did until I noticed that the Hublot badge isn't in the middle of the dial. That's just odd!

I am so tempted to buy this piece! The F1 not the Hublot 😁 Going back to the AD today to have another look!
