I think David is being a little harsh.
They did shave a whole 1mm off the usual 44mm case for this one!

To answer BPD, I still prefer the D-Blue. That thing gets my juices flowing.

I was about to say, "What's different compared to the last one?" ;)

If you design watches for Rolex, you don't even need to do the whole job in one go, it's fine to do the case one year, then do the dial to match a while later (39mm explorer).

I think its a good watch. But for most rolex fans that i know, DeepSea blue dial is still consider better than this one. For me, the only rolex i want is the millgaus.

The only Rolex that speaks to me is the Explorer 1.

I find it so odd that a company so bland as Rolex makes this

As an amateur gemologist, i don't mind looking at it through the window glass of smithsonian museum. Hey, guilty pleasure achievement unlocked !

In fairness, they make a few models FAR more ostentatious than that!

Agreed, very firmly on my shopping list, possibly next after seeing this years TAG releases. I bought a fake explorer in a market in egypt(?) for about $20 when I was 18, because I needed something to tell the time when I was teaching windsurf classes and it looked nice. It was later stolen by an angry ex girlfriend thinking it was real :D Tried on a real one last year...just as nice as I remember :)

    (Sorry for the off topic).

You'd be amazed to see some of the gems covered versions they have for the Gulf countries.

By comparison, this one is tasteful.

The leopard-skin dial models are particularly challenging.

I am a big proponent of the "Less is More" philosophy in design. Visible gems on watches can be particularly important and desired by women, but for male pieces they tend to be a big 'No No' in my book.

That one is still discreet. But I'd still go for the 'plain' one.

Gems on watches is like driving a two seater convertible.

    Only for women.

A two seater convertible is referred to as a Roadster, and I don't think they are reserved to women.

    T'was a joke!

Anyway, some places refer to roadster, other countries use other names such as spyder or cabriolet. I use the term convertible as ease of reference for all. They use to have different meanings in yesteryear but now it's a general mash up for marketing sake.
