On a rattrapante, the chrono hands start off moving together as one. Hitting the split stops the initial hand while the secondary continues; hitting the split again catches up the first hand and they move together again. So it's a way to continue counting while being able to stop and mark down a split

I guessed it would be something like that, but I've never seen one before so wasn't sure.

I guessed it would be something like that, but I've never seen one before so wasn't sure.
The S/EL ana-digi models have this continuous split timing function, as well as rally stage timing and lap timing. The hands are different colors to easily tell them apart.

The operation is slightly different. The 1/100th hand is stationary until hitting stop, then it moves to the 1/100th position. In then goes back to zero when timing the next stage. Since it's digital, it has memory and the times at different stages can be recalled and displayed at any time.
