Strange concept... TAG actually making a watch for enthusiasts and bothering to ask them what they think.

Okay, so what I don't understand is why the 'enthusiasts' think a watch paying tribute to an 'enthusiast's' watch should automatically be produced to sell to the enthusiasts? I don't think that is the point at all. Because the 'enthusiasts' will pick fault with every little detail and it will never be what they actually want (which is, basically the original), so the target market is actually not the 'enthusiasts', but (for want of a better word) 'non-enthusiasts' who can be manipulated by the back story and marketing BS.

Be more like Omega, maybe that should be the takeaway.
They also make avant garde, ‘modern’ for want of a better word watches. At the same time they’re still making the good ol’ Speedy because it was perfect to begin with so why mess with it?
Not just sort of head on looks a lot like but proper original in all proportions.
The Monaco looks very different from the original.
If your argument is that watch enthusiasts are a small number of people and TAG Heuer wants to make ‘modern’ watches for the masses then why does Omega outsell TAG Heuer by a large margin?

 

Not everything, or automatically. But would be nice if TAG sometimes did something to appeal to Heuer enthusiasts. The closest they came was the Carrera reissue in the 1990s - most agree this is a near perfect reissue. Getting the enthusiasts on side can have a trickle-down effect onto the mass market as well. The problem for TAG is that it doesn't think it can be "avant garde" and celebrate it's history at the same time.

Yeah, I get your argument about Omega, totally. I don't understand why TAG can't make 1:1 copies of old pieces, I assume they feel the costs don't add up for the number they can sell, so they want to use current parts, but that rather defeats the object... and so it seems we get this situation where they make something they can sell to non-enthusiasts instead. I guess the fact is the number of people who are willing to spend the cash for a 'modern interpretation' outweighs the number of people willing to pay for a perfect replica (which, let's face it is never going to be 'perfect').

 

I agree, I guess TAG would argue that to make a 1:1 replica would just be too expensive. I mean it staggers me how expensive these reissues of very simple looking watches are, for example the Carrera 39mm is ridiculous, there's no way it should cost £6000. I guess they don't have the confidence in their pull to to put out a perfect replica and charge £8000 for it.

 

On the other hand, one might question how come they could make these low volume things at reasonable prices back then but not now? Or were they excessively expensive back then too?

 

They weren't cheap, but they certainly weren't luxury items either. They were in a competition for sales.

 

You can make a 1:1 copy for the same cost as the current designs, totally. Material cost is a very low retail price contributor anyway. I’d be surprised if the material cost of a 39mm Carrera exceeds 300 euro.

 

I’m not saying they should make 1:1 re-editions just to be clear.
