It's Chinese.

Cantonese is Chinese. Mandarin Chinese is the alternative which it did not sound like to me.

Mandarin or Cantonese were the obvious two choices, given that this is a Chinese dialect. Doubt they were Wu (Shanghainese) or Minbei (Fuzhou).
