S/EL CG1122

Hi, I'm based in the UK.
I've had my S/EL since the mid '90's when my Dad brought it back as a present for me from Kuwait.
My Dad unfortunately died and I want to get the watch working again. I stopped wearing it as it has a leather strap and the strap perished.
I have had the strap replaced but the watch has now stopped working. I've had the battery replaced twice now thinking it was that but it still is not working.
The digital displays work and the stop watch function works. It starts working and the second display hands move but after several minutes it stops.
Is there any good independent specialists in the UK people recommend to send these watches to rather than an AD. Thanks Tal

Nice watch!

I love this model. I own several in different colors, including a grey dial just like yours. I'm in the US so can't recommend a UK shop for repair. But I've been researching this model's movement to perhaps attempt a repair on my own.

I suspect your problem is one of 3 things:
  • A bad coil. The ETA 251.252 movement has 5 coils, each one controls a different timing function.
  • Gears and other mechanical parts need servicing. Something could be gunked up, causing the problem.
  • Electronic Circuit has some kind of fault

Since some timing functions work but others don't, hopefully a coil replacement might fix it. This would be a simple and affordable repair. If it's one of the other potential problems, an alternative is to have a shop swap in a new replacement ETA 251.252 movement. But these movements are not cheap and not easy to find.

Good luck on getting it fixed! 馃

I also have a CG1110 and a 262.006/1 again which I've owned since the mid 90's the 2000 being my first purchase. Thanks again any help would be appreciated.

Great collection!

The coils are available on ebay. The ETA part number is 4060, green or red. It looks like an easy DIY. I just ordered a green coil for my CG1123 which I've also owned since the '90s. The chrono/stopwatch function recently stopped working on mine, but it still tells time.

From your problem description, it would be Coil #3 that would need to be replaced (hours, minutes & secs). Which is the middle green one.

To get at the coil, you just need to remove two screws (where I've drawn arrows) and take the cover plate off. You don't even need to take the movement out of the case. But do remove the battery first. The coil is also held in place by two screws.

I don't know if this will work. But I was able to fix another quartz watch by replacing coil, so it's worth a try. Since the coils only cost around $15-$20.

Notwithstanding the joy of DIY, can you send these into Tag's service department or are the S/EL's too old? I saw one of these for sale online where the seller bragged that it had just received full service from TH, which given my experiences with TH service on my old Formula 1s, I find doubtful.

I would suggest getting a multimeter (if you don't have one) to test the coils. They are relatively inexpensive.

I was able to fix my CG1123's chrono function by replacing the coil. But the first NOS coil replacement I bought was a dud and had to be returned. It failed the multimeter's continuity test. A multimeter can also test the coil to make sure it's providing the right resistance. The green coil should be showing about 1.5k ohms, the red coil about 1.8k ohms.

You can use the multimeter to check the coil in question in the movement as well.

That's a good question. I suspect that TAG might not be able to do certain repairs due to scarce replacement parts. But they might be willing to "service" the watch if everything is working correctly.

Keep in mind that your CG1110 uses a different movement, an ETA 251.262. Which is cheaper and easier to find compared to the ETA 251.252 used in the Ana-Digi models (CG1122, CG1123, CG1111). So, you might want to consider just replacing the entire movement.

As I just mentioned to @talw, you can use a multimeter to test your coils to see if they're the problem. This diagram shows the coils and associated counters for the 251.262. (The diagram I shared above is for the 251.252)

Tag Heuer Service Price list

They are not cheap. It costs more than the S/EL watch that I acquired recently.

Thanks for the great info!

Thanks Mspeedster,
You're the man, I have now sorted out my watch and wearing it with pride 馃憤
I'm now getting curious about the maintenance and wondered how easy it is to remove and replace the bezzle and take out the movements on these. If it's difficult I'll leave it to an expert.

Thanks Again for your help

You're welcome, I'm glad it worked for you!

Removing the movement isn't hard with the right knowhow. I've not replaced a bezel, so can't comment firsthand, but that does require a specific tool. I'd suggest watching some youtube DIY videos to see if it's something you'd feel comfortable attempting on your own.
