Reflections on the S/el

Almost a year since this thread was active ( sigh ! 馃檨 )....

I was prompted to revive it when the latest copy of Motor Sport ( Feb '22 ) dropped through my letterbox. They run a regular 'watches' page and featured this time is the latest Senna special edition - the Formula 1xSenna. The reviewer seems fairly unimpressed, noting the leather bracelet embossed with 'S link' design and the 65-400 numbering on the bezel. He then goes on to point out the TAG watch most associated with Senna was an S/el chronograph. he finishes by asking 'Surely it's time for an accurate limited edition replica?'

Part of me hopes that they won't - the S/el remains to me vey much 'of its time'. Which is why I like it so much ! ::stirthepot::

Don't worry, this will never happen. Senna sells a few watches but I don't think TAG would think it was worth reviving a completely dead model to sell a few watches to a limited number of die hard enthusiasts. Especially a quartz piece that has a ceiling price of maybe 拢2000-2500

I'm quite sure you're right. ( But I couldn't bear to see this thread languishing so far down the forum. Someone has to fly a flag for the S/el ! ::rimshot:: )

Imagine if Tag Heuer rerelease this S/EL with solar powered quartz. I am sure half of the members on this forum will be on hunt ::rimshot::

Well, I don't know about half. I just wonder what price point a new S/el would be aimed at?

I think we need another decade or two before this design becomes trendy again, at the moment I doubt a re-edition S/El would sell well.

Yes, but eventually no one will give a hoot about Senna, they need to strike soon or forget it completely. But it will be 拢3500 and no one will pay that. Or they will make a Heuer 02 17mm thick version and no one will want it.

Actually. Beyond the Senna fanatics, who the hell is going to buy an 80s designed SEL, in two tone, with digi screens on a brown leather strap?
If only Senna had lived long enough to wear the re-edition Carrera...

Big S/EL lover and believer here. My reflections/thoughts:

Pros:
- ground-breaking, gorgeous design that smashed sales records and was a must-have, high-end piece prior to modern socials/internet promotion
- unique, immediately recognizable Tag Heuer iconic watch with strong 80's - 90's plus F1 vibe
- polarizing design - but many love it, including both adults and youths (my two teenagers think they are cool and would wear them)
- wearable, comfortable size and band(s)

Cons:
- would likely be a very expensive reissue for quartz watches, not sure how well they'd sell (but automatic only could be an alternative)
- no need to reissue when there are many, many available via every secondary market with some in like-new condition plus Tag still services S/EL's

Below is a picture of an amazing red dial S/EL that I recently flipped (WG111C) - it was too new for me to consider wearing/scratching up! (Note: This watch with a lapis blue shirt was perfection.) I've ordered another model S/EL (navy dial) that should be delivered within a week. Pics coming for that one, too.

Enjoy the ride!

P.S. @Calibre11 The subject of this thread reads "Refections" not "Reflections" as I believe it should.

I wouldn't worry about it. TAG Heuer has a complete disregard for pretty much everything that happened between about 1975 and 2016.

But maybe once they've finally done the panda everyone wants, we can move on?

I was told in 2018 that TAG would be focussing on more recent models like the Kirium at some point. I'm not saying they were going to re-issue it, but... than again what else could that mean?

Ariel mentioned on a recent episode of ABTW podcast that the Link is likely to get an update and become TAG Heuer's desired integrated bracelet watch, putting more focus on competing in the integrated bracelet hysteria. I think if they do it right, an updated Link could get real juicy. The problem with the recent calibro cincos Links is that they are 'too safe' in their design and come off as very boring. A more daring dial design, some gem versions, hopefully a rainbow version, could make things real interesting.
