This year there’s another 50th Anniversary very linked to the Heuer Monaco... Last week I was in Stuttgart visiting the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche Museums, and there was this special exhibition for the 50th Anniversary of the Porsche 917!
That's awesome! This pic was from my visit to the Porsche Museum in 2012. Many of the same 917s were on display.
Info (and drivers) of this particular 917 Gulf from the 50th Anniversary exhibition: This 917 without the body was also very interesting:
What a cool car. Apart from looking sensational, the other thing that is amazing about these race cars is how flimsy there are- the driver is surrounded by a couple of steel tubes and a small tub and lightweight body. You had to be a special kind of brave to punt these along Le Mans at 3am in the rain.
The Grand Tour did a segment on the 917 for the 50th Anniversary. A real highlight was 78 years old Dickie Attwood giving the 917 the beans vs. the GT2 RS. And he's not even wearing a helmet!?
