Isn't it funny how the supposed 'hero' piece, the one that's all over YouTube is the bottom of the pile?

The F1 (to me, and I suspect a fair few) was always the plastic bodied "low-cost" "entry-level" watch and was pretty special in itself - being an unusual watch (plastic bodies, plastic straps) for a "quality" manufacturer like TAG Heuer to have produced. It had cachet simply because it was different. Anybody could make a metal bodied "sporty" watch (and many did), but only TAG did a high quality movement (relatively for the time) in a plastic bodied watch that would be robust, but would also show it's scars well.

That's just one of the reasons that the metal cases F1 always seemed like a dilution of the F1 ethos: it was going with the herd again. When I was a kid the F1 was far, far superior to the other plastic watch of the time: a Swatch. It's probably why I'm still not a fan of even the modern F1 series (despite them owing nothing but the name to the original Tag Heuer F1).

I also think the plastic F1 bezel on a metal case/strap makes the watch look like a cheap chinese clone, but the entire watch in plastic looks genuine, offbeat, but genuine - weird, but that's the way they look to me (and probably others).

Yeah I never really liked the metal case ones either, but that was more to do with the bracelets not being suitable for larger wrists.

4. 158 pts - Toronto (0 wins, 5 podiums)

Season recap:
Hawaii took an early lead, with Tokyo, TAG Blue and LA in close pursuit. By mid-season, Tokyo had surged into the lead, with TAG Blue in second place and Hawaii in third. The second half of the season saw Hawaii regain the lead, TAG Blue in second place and Tokyo dropping to third. The last two races would see Tokyo make a late season charge, overtaking TAG Blue and just falling short of Hawaii. A fairly tight battle at the top!

I know it’s a vote on preference, but maybe it was skewed by the fact the LA wasn’t readily available to view. I get the hawai wasn’t, but many had the equivalent to compare perhaps?

@RockBurner captured exactly how I feel about the OG F1s. For me, they were all about color and fun. I had absolutely no interest in getting the steel with bracelets back in the day. If I wanted something like that, plenty of other watches to choose from. Being a bit older now, I did think about LA as a purchase possibility, but my heart was really set on the colorful ones because that's what the F1 is to me.

I did recheck the scores between Toronto and LA several times. Because LA had 2 wins 5 podiums, while Toronto had 0 wins 5 podiums, so intuitively it seemed the two should be reversed. But it seems there are enough of us who prefer color when it comes to the F1 for Toronto to have prevailed over LA.
