So the last six years I've heard nothing but 'this isn't a Carrera, that's not a Carrera'... but it's apparently okay for Tudor to make a watch that isn't a Pelagos and call it a Pelagos. Right? I guess it only applies to watches that get bigger. That must be it. 🙄

The Pelagos name is what, less than 10 years old? And only one generation. So Tudor is still figuring out what it stands for (if anything)

The Carrera name however, stood for a chronograph that was equally at home on the racetrack or in the boardroom. Up until TAG decided that it just meant any ugly skeleton in a tuna can they can slap the first generation's lugs onto

So what you are saying is that in twenty years time the original 42mm proper dive watch will just be 'the crappy first generation that no one liked'. I see... well, it will be a funny to see them bring it back as a special edition and my friends LHD to rocket in value. 😉

Why do you hate the Pelagos lite so much. Let go of the anger and embrace the Tuuudah luuuv

Yeah okay, but my friend who owns the Proper Pelagos hates this new one too.

Original Pelagos owners are bound to dislike this new one.

I picked up this instead….
Congrats @TonyStark!!!
I would've picked the BB58 Bronze over the Pelagos 39 too, because I have nothing bronze in my collection and it just looks awesome! Supposedly these Bronze BB58s are only sold via Tudor Boutiques, is that where you bought yours?

Well he has a small wrist so this should have really appealed to him, but he detests it. Keeps looking at it and telling me it doesn't look right.

Nah, the 42mm dive watch is here to stay. A 39mm option just means those who prefer a smaller watch, can still spend their money with Tudor.

It's not the end of the world

Your friend is entitled to his opinion, but he's just one person not the market. I agree that the LHD is a more handsome and capable watch, but I see nothing wrong with the new 39.

Also, the FXD looks more like the 39 than the 42 even though the FXD is 42mm. Call it evolution. The great thing is, all 3 are available to buy, so what's not to like?

Okay, it's just that 'Pelagos' stood for something and now it's just going to mean whatever Tudor want it to mean.... wait, where have we heard that before. Plus once the hype dies down it will be interesting to see how it compares when someone goes to buy a watch and they have two rather similar 39mm 200m dive watches to choose from.

Yep from one that has just opened; they have a little stock left. The others in the uk don’t have any left, according to the guys in the shop anyway….

I really don’t see it as a binary choice. And I always found it odd that Tudor hadn’t expanded the Pelagos line into more of a family. The 39 isn’t a mini-me of the original, but the shared design lineage is pretty clear.

if you are trying to display and market the pelagos it makes much more sense to have a collection rather than a single watch amongst a dozen or more black bay variants…

Agreed and agreed.

The original Pelagos always seems to get very high praise, but it hasn't been a big seller for Tudor. Was size the main issue? Not so sure, Omega has no issues selling their very popular Seamaster Pro in 42mm. So if you're Tudor, do you simply roll out a mini me version in 39mm or try something a little different that might potentially sell better?

I guess it remains to be seen if the watch has staying power after all the hype dies down. I'm just glad to see Tudor expanding it's Pelagos line rather than rolling out yet another Black Bay.

Side by side compare of the Pelagos 39 and BB58 blue. I must say the bracelet of the Pelagos wins for me, it's cleaner and has a nicer taper. Still a tough call on overall looks, color preferences put aside.

Agree the Pelagos wins out in that video, the blue doesn't really grab (I assume they look better in real life), but they really had me at the titanium bracelet with the micro adjust. Sitting here with the bb58 on my wrist, possibly the finest watch ever made (FYI @Aquagraph ), I'm warming to the Pelagos. It looks like it would be a great everyday tool watch.

It's a great looking watch, so well designed and executed. Nicely spec'd for the price as we're used to from Tudor. A steal compared to Omega or TAG Heuer. Punches way over its weight. a sub 40mm diver with modern aesthetics. Fills a gap in the range, no matter what you read and hear about the BB comparisons. It's not pseudo vintage or splattered with fauxtina so not sure why Rob hates it so much. Is it the size below 40mm or the fact that it gets a million times more buzz than any AR release?
Sure it's rather formal and loads of people will wonder if that's a sub on your wrist. In another colour it would shine even more. Blue is inevitably coming. Green or coral?

I don't know why I hate it so much, other than it represents the 'dumbing down' of a previously excellent watch. I think it's a shame. I do think that if it was the other way round it would have been better. So if the Pelagos had been 39mm initially and they produced the 42mm (with all the bells and whistles) as a sort of 'SuperPelagos' type thing, then it would have been more acceptable. At least that way round they would have been making something intrinsically 'better' than the standard model, this way round it feels like a 'budget' version, except it's not even that much cheaper.
