Thanks @Mr_Orange

I was looking at buying from the US.
Agreed a price and worked out the exchange rate including the shipping fees.
When I asked about the tax payable coming into Australia they said it had nothing to do with them and I would have to work it out on delivery of goods.

I know Anything over $1000 is subject to GST (10%) but I have no idea how it's eventually paid?

I haven't come across anyone that can explain it or who has done it before.
There are lots of good deals to be had from overseas.

That's correct, import duties and tax are the buyer's responsibility. Most international shippers will tell you what you owe and not release the goods until you pay (hence my fight with DHL).

The $1000 minimum has long gone. We have Gerry F***ing Harvey to thank for that!

You pay GST on the cost of the goods and the shipping amount. See here for more detail: https://intas.com.au/importing-business-goods-australia/#Australian_Customs_Duty_Calculator. Not everything attracts duty though.

I managed to find all the information I needed online at the time (approx 5 years ago) in order to educate DHL. It's not straightforward though.

My other import was from HK and the seller was happy to mark the package as 'gift' on the declaration.
